background

The Portuguese were the first Europeans to discover the island of Timor in 1512. The first landing took place on August 18, 1515. In 1556 they founded their first settlement with Lifau . The governor of the Portuguese Timor colony had his seat here from 1702 onwards . In 1769 he was relocated to Dili . After the Carnation Revolution in 1974, the colony was supposed to be prepared for independence, but in 1975 a brief civil war broke out between the East Timorese parties. Portugal's last governor, Mário Lemos Pires , withdrew to the island of Atauro , while FRETILIN unilaterally proclaimed independence on November 28th due to the pressure of the Indonesian occupation of the border areas . From December 7th, the open invasion and occupation of East Timor by Indonesia began. The next day the Portuguese administration was evacuated from Atauro by a Portuguese warship. Internationally, East Timor was considered "Portuguese territory under Indonesian administration", while Portugal stood up for its former colony. Finally, through negotiations between Portugal, Indonesia and the United Nations, a referendum was held in East Timor in 1999 , which resulted in independence. After three years of interim administration by the United Nations , East Timor was finally given independence in 2002. Portugal provided police officers, soldiers and other personnel for the various UN missions several times. Both states are members of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP).

The East Timorese embassy is located at Largo dos Jerónimos, n. ° 3, 1400-219 Lisbon . It was the first embassy in the world to open independent East Timor.
