The East Timorese embassy in South Korea opened on February 24, 2009. João Viegas Carrascalão , East Timor's first ambassador, received his appointment from President José Ramos-Horta on April 22, 2009. Carrascalão died suddenly in 2012.

South Korea is an important destination for East Timorese guest workers. In 2011, the Southeast Asian country received three used patrol boats from South Korea.
