South Korea and East Timor officially established diplomatic relations in May 2002.

The non-governmental organization Korea East Timor Solidarity was established in South Korea during the occupation of East Timor by Indonesia to support the demands for independence.

South Korea provided staff for the United Nations Interim Administration for East Timor (UNTAET) and the United Nations Assistance Mission in East Timor (UNMISET). In 2011, East Timor received three patrol boats from South Korea, which were named Kamenassa, Díli and Hera . The first East Timorese guest workers arrived in South Korea on October 27, 2009. In 2015, 1,400 East Timorese were working in South Korea. South Korea is also providing development aid to the Southeast Asian country in the areas of human resource development, health and education through the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).

The South Korean Kim Shin-hwan has been teaching East Timorese youths football since 2002 . In 2004 Kim won the Rivelino Cup in Hiroshima with his East Timorese youth team . A Barefoot Dream , the film about its story, was shown in around 350 theaters in South Korea in 2010. Taekwondo became known in East Timor through the South Korean soldiers . It gained a certain popularity and now East Timorese athletes compete in international Taekwondo competitions ( see also: Sports in East Timor ).

In 2018, the East Timor’s Statistical Office registered imports from South Korea worth 4,463,000 US dollars, placing South Korea in 15th place among the countries of origin. Goods worth USD 271,005 went from East Timor to South Korea. It was 68,230 kg of coffee. This puts South Korea in 11th place among the destination countries for all exports and 10th among coffee importers.
