The states of Brunei and East Timor maintain friendly relations . The diplomatic relations were taken up in 2002 after East Timor was granted independence.

The first ambassador of East Timor, Roberto Soares , was still based in Singapore from 2009 . Marçal Avelino Ximenes was appointed the first East Timorese ambassador based in Brunei in 2016.

Brunei has had an embassy in Dili since 2015. Brunei's first ambassador to East Timor was Paduka Hj Abdul Salam Momin until 2016 .

economy

Brunei is a member of ASEAN , which East Timor wants to join. Both countries derive most of their gross domestic product from oil sources. Brunei expects opportunities in the import of halal -Lebensmitteln in East Timor. The Sultanate wants to sell poultry from farms in Darwin, Australia to East Timor. These foods would be of interest to Muslim tourists , for example . In addition, Brunei East Timor could help with vocational training for its population, for example with scholarships for students at schools in Brunei. Brunei's fish can industry could expand into East Timor.

As of June 2017, there is only one Brunei businessman who works in East Timor. It is one of the main suppliers of oxygen for medical and industrial purposes.

For 2018, the East Timorese Statistical Office registered the import of components for prefabricated houses from Brunei to the value of 5,436 US dollars.
