The Myanmar-East Timorese relations describe the interstate relationship between Myanmar and East Timor .

history

East Timor and Myanmar established diplomatic relations on September 26, 2006.

The East Timorese Nobel Peace Prize laureate and then Foreign Minister José Ramos-Horta repeatedly called for the release of the then imprisoned Myanmar Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi . In 2011, as President of Myanmar , Ramos-Horta pledged to support the state's reforms. With regard to the persecution and expulsion of the Rohingya in Myanmar, Ramos-Horta partially defended the now de facto head of government in 2017. Aung San Suu Kyi has taken a position against the human rights violations.

In August 2013 a delegation from Myanmar visited East Timor to find out about the financial system and in particular about resource management. East Timor's Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão visited Myanmar the following month.

In 2016, President Taur Matan Ruak appointed João Câmara as the first ambassador for East Timor based in Myanmar. The embassy is in Yangon .

Myanmar does not have an embassy in Dili . The embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia, is responsible .

economy

Myanmar is a member of ASEAN , which East Timor wants to join. In 2018, the East Timor’s Statistical Office registered the import of building components for houses from Myanmar to East Timor to the value of 25 US dollars. There were also re-exports from East Timor to Myanmar totaling 13,000 US dollars (23rd place).
