Janelle Anne Saffin (born November 1, 1954 in Ipswich , Queensland , Australia ) is an Australian politician. She is a member of the Australian Labor Party (ALP).

Career

Saffin left school at the age of 13, but then studied independently in order to obtain the qualifications for her later professional training. She is trained as a teacher and lawyer. She attended Northern Rivers College of Advanced Education in Lismore, New South Wales and Macquarie University .

Saffin initially worked as a teacher and ran a small business. She was also active in community facilities and local charities. Saffin joined the ALP in 1982 where she held leading positions at the local level. She was a party delegate at party conventions at state and state level and a member of the Corrective Services Advisory Council. Saffin was also President of the North Coast Breast Screening Program and a member of the Northern Rivers Social Development Council committee.

In 1991 Saffin ran for Lismore unsuccessfully for the New South Wales Legislative Assembl, but in 1995 Saffin succeeded in making the leap to the New South Wales Legislative Council, of which she was a member from March 25, 1995 to February 28, 2003. From November 17, 1999 to November 13, 2001, Saffin was a member of the Select Committee to Increase Prison Population.

Saffin began working for the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and became Special Adviser to Sukehiro Hasegawa , the UN Special Envoy for East Timor (2004-2006). She also became the chief political advisor for politics and law for Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Foreign Minister José Ramos-Horta , who first became Prime Minister in 2006 and then President from 2007 to 2012 as a result of the unrest crisis in East Timor . Saffin is still a special advisor and confidante of Ramos-Horta today.

In 2007 and 2010 she was elected to the Australian House of Representatives for the Page constituency. Her term lasted from November 24, 2007 to September 7, 2013, when she lost the following election.

Saffin joined the New South Wales Legislative Assembly and Lismore Town Council on March 23, 2019.

Saffin is a member of the Far North Coast Domestic Violence Liaison Committee, the Northern Rivers Regional Economic Development Organization, and Amnesty International . She is also a member of the Board of Governors NSW Law Foundation, the International Commission of Jurist (Australian Section), the Honorary Secretary Burma Lawyers Council (Australian Section) and the NSW Law Society.

She is also interested in development policy in Australia's neighboring countries. In addition to East Timor , her focus is on Myanmar . Saffin founded the Australia-Myanmar Parliament Group, which she also chaired. In addition, she worked with several organizations from Myanmar, including those of the different ethnic nationalities in the country and all political parties. Saffin is the patron of the Australia-Myanmar University Constitutional Democracy Project. She was also the founding patron of the Australia-Myanmar Chamber of Commerce.

Awards

In 2015, Saffin received the Medal des Ordem de Timor-Leste from East Timor's President Taur Matan Ruak .

Personal

Saffin is married to Jim Saffin and has one son and three stepons. She mentions reading, walking, swimming and watching movies as hobbies.
