One human rights activist who campaigned for the independence of East Timor was the Thai Chalida Tajaroensuk , who was awarded the Ordem de Timor-Leste in 2019 for her services .

Diplomatic relations were established in 2002.

The kingdom participated with troops and warships in the International Armed Forces East Timor (INTERFET) to deal with the crisis in East Timor in 1999 . With 1,600 men, Thailand provided the second largest contingent after Australia . General Songkitti Jaggabatara was deputy commander of INTERFET.

In 2010, East Timor’s President José Ramos-Horta visited Thailand. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn visited East Timor in 2019.

East Timor has had an embassy in Bangkok since 2008. There is also an honorary consulate in the province of Prachuap Khiri Khan .

Thailand maintains an embassy in Dili .

Entry requirements

In April 2017, the East Timorese government passed the visa-free regime for citizens of Thailand.

Thailand is a member of ASEAN , which East Timor wants to join.

In 2013 a letter of intent was agreed. East Timor advises Thailand on oil production and policy. East Timor has experience in this area through its occurrences in the Timor Sea .

For 2018, the East Timor’s Statistical Office registered imports from Thailand to the value of 16,653,000 US dollars (2016: 12,432,000 US dollars), which puts Thailand in 6th place (2016: 7th) with a share of 3.2% East Timorese importers here. Vehicles accounted for $ 1,410,740 of this. Goods worth 245,000 US dollars were exported to Thailand from East Timor (2016: no exports). East Timor's main export, coffee, did not play a major role. The re-exports from and to Thailand were valued at US $ 28,000 (2016: US $ 21,000).

About 1000 Thai citizens live in East Timor and mainly operate restaurants there.
