history

East Timor and Singapore established diplomatic relations on May 20, 2002, the day East Timor was granted independence.

Within ASEAN , Singapore reacted with reluctance in 1975 to efforts to annex Indonesia's Portuguese Timor .

From 1999 Singapore participated in the International Armed Forces East Timor (INTERFET), the United Nations Interim Administration for East Timor (UNTAET), the subsequent United Nations Support Mission in East Timor (UNMISET) and finally the United Nations Office in East Timor (UNOTIL). The peacekeepers belonged to the regular troops of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) and performed their service together with the New Zealand Defense Force in west East Timor. In the course of time there was also a team of doctors, civilian police officers, helicopters and staff officers at the UNTAET headquarters in Dili . Up to 2004 alone, a total of 1,100 SAF members were doing their service in East Timor. Major General Huck Gim Tan from Singapore was UNMISET's military commander from August 2002 to August 2003.

Goods worth 182,000 US dollars were shipped to Singapore from East Timor in 2018, making Singapore 15th as the destination country. East Timor's main export, coffee, played a subordinate role. There were also re-exports from East Timor to Singapore totaling 1,402,000 US dollars (4th place).
