Mateus de Jesus

Mateus de Jesus (born September 5, 1959 in the Aldeia Manunia , Atara , Portuguese Timor , † January 30, 2015 in Singapore ) was a politician from East Timor . He was a member of the Congresso Nacional da Reconstrução Timorense (CNRT) party.

Life

Jesus was born in the Aldeia Manunia in what is now the municipality of Ermera . His parents were Romaldo de Jesus and Paulina Guterres Moniz . Mateus was the fifth of six children. From 1969 to 1973 he attended primary school up to fourth grade in oboe ( Suco Cota Bo'ot ), in neighboring Bobonaro . From 1975 to 1976 the family lived in Aimeta (Suco Cota Bo'ot). Jesus had been a representative of FRETILIN since 1974 . Because of the Indonesian invasion, the family fled to the woods in 1976 and then to Bobonaro . In 1979 Jesus became a volunteer church teacher in Bobonaro. From 1981 to 1983 he was a full-time teacher in Mawi (Suco Molop ). However, Jesus only received teacher training from 1983 to 1986 in Dili . In 1992 Jesus was elected Chefe de Suco in Colimau . He held the office until 1999. At the same time, Jesus supported the East Timorese resistance against the Indonesian occupation, which is why he was captured and tortured by the Indonesian military. During the crisis in East Timor in 1999 , Jesus fled to Dili.

Until 2000, Jesus worked again as a teacher in Colimau, before he became coordinator for UNTAET in what was then the sub-district of Bobonaro . From 2001 to 2007 he was deputy administrator of the Bobonaro District .

In 2007 he moved into the national parliament of East Timor for the first time as vice-leader of the Partido Unidade Nacional (PUN) . Here he was a member of the Commission on Agriculture, Fisheries, Forestry, Natural Resources and the Environment (Commission D). In 2009 the parliamentary majority decided that every member should be provided with a company car. PUN and FRETILIN refused. Since Jesus did not want to give up his official car, he was expelled from the party. Due to the party rules of the PUN, however, he kept his seat as an independent MP. In the parliamentary elections in East Timor in 2012 , Jesus stood on the CNRT's list and entered parliament again. He was now a member of the Ethics Committee (Committee G).

On January 30, 2015, after a long illness, Jesus died in Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore.
