Place and Suco Bobonaro are located in the Bobonaro Administrative Office ( Bobonaro municipality ) in East Timor .

Place name

Bobonaro ( tetum Bobonaru , also Aubá , Bubo Naro , Babonaro ) is derived from the Tetum word "Buburbnaru" and means "large eucalyptus ". In 1936, Bobonaro was renamed Vila Armindo Monteiro by the Portuguese, after the politician Armindo Rodrigues de Sttau Monteiro . But the name did not catch on and a few years after the Second World War , the old name was reverted to.

Bobonaro is the main town of the Suco of the same name and the administrative office. During the Portuguese colonial period, it was temporarily the capital of the then Bobonaro district before Maliana took over this role.

The place is about 45 km from the coast, at an altitude of 715  m , in the north of the administrative office of Bobonaro, on both sides of the border between the Sucos Bobonaro and Malilait . It is about 60 km to the northeast as the crow flies to the state capital Dili , and about 13 km to the west to the municipal capital Maliana. It is also only a few kilometers to the border with Indonesia .

The city has 6,110 inhabitants (2006) and stretches for several kilometers along the road. The market in Bobonaro is of regional importance and is well worth seeing for tourists. There is also a primary school, a preparatory school for secondary education , a helipad and a community health center. The Church is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of Mary .

The Suco has 1924 inhabitants (2015), of which 929 are men and 995 women. The population density is 162.6 inhabitants / km². There are 348 households in the Suco. About 95% of the population name Bunak as their mother tongue. Less than 5% speak Tetum Prasa and Kemak , small minorities Mambai or Habun .

Before the 2015 regional reform, Bobonaro had an area of ​​12.49 km². Now there are 11.83 km². The Suco is located in the center of the administrative office of the same name. In the north are the Sucos Malilait and Lourba , in the east Carabau , in the southeast Lour , in the south and southwest Ai-Assa and in the northwest Oeleo . This is where the Anaslota river rises , which is part of the Lóis river system and initially flows north to Oeleo. The Loumea flows through the Suco from north to south .

Lactil ( Laktil ) and Lesigatal ( Lesi Gatal ) are southwest of Bobonaro, while Holital ( Holtal ), Mautaloh and Tuluapu ( Tuluatu ) are located to the southeast . Further east are the villages of Kulumba and Hok ( Bok ) and beyond the Loumea Dena , Lalebol , Maucugun ( Maucugum ) and Lepo . In addition to the primary school in Bobonaro, there is one each in Holital, Lesigatal and Maucugun.

The three Aldeias Lactil , Lesigatal and Tuluata are located in Bobonaro . The Aldeia Tas-Masac was abolished in 2009.

In the 20th century, the Portuguese cavalry had a base in Bobonaro. In 1942, Allied troops operated in the region in the Battle of Timor , fighting the Japanese . On August 10, 1942, the Japanese bombed Bobonaro, where the Australians had built their quarters. Shortly thereafter, Japan controlled the area.

In the elections of 2004/2005 was Abílio de Araújo elected Chefe de Suco. In the 2009 elections , Esteves Barreto won .
