António Verdial de Sousa Gama (born July 4, 1963 in Bobonaro , Portuguese Timor ) is an East Timorese politician. He is a member of the Kmanek Haburas Unidade Nasional Timor Oan (KHUNTO).

Career

Sousa holds a bachelor's degree in agricultural law.

Sousa was a civil servant both during the Indonesian occupation and in independent East Timor. From July to November 2007 he was head of the Relações Publica Documentação e Divulgação informação (publication of documentation and disclosure information) department in the Direção Nacional dos direitos de Cidadania (National Directorate for Citizenship Rights ) and from 2007 to 2010 National Director of the Direcção Nacional de Terras, Propriedades e de Serviço Cadastrais (National Directorate for Land, Property and Cadastre). Both authorities are based in the East Timorese Ministry of Justice .

When KHUNTO was founded in 2011, Sousa became the party's general secretary. He was later replaced by José Agustinho da Silva and Sousa became the first vice chairman of KHUNTO. Sousa held the office until March 2020.

In 2017, Sousa took third place on the KHUNTO party list in the parliamentary elections on July 22nd and was thus elected as a member of the national parliament. On September 6, he was elected Deputy Speaker of Parliament. He was also a member of the Public Finance Commission (Commission C). In the early elections in 2018 , Sousa was in 11th place in the Aliança para Mudança e Progresso (AMP), to which KHUNTO also belongs, and came back to parliament. Initially, Sousa renounced his parliamentary seat, as he was intended for a government office. However, President Francisco Guterres refused his appointment, which is why Sousa returned to parliament. He is now a member of the Commissions for Education, Health, Social Security and Gender Equality (Commission F) and for Education, Youth, Culture and Civil Rights (Commission G).
