Vivian Balakrishnan ( Tamil : விவியன் பாலகிருஷ்ணன்; born January 25, 1961 in Singapore ) is the incumbent Foreign Minister of Singapore and a member of parliament for the ruling People's Action Party (PAP).

biography

Balakrishnan was born in 1961 to a Tamil father of Indian descent and a mother of Chinese descent. He completed his elementary and secondary education at the Anglo-Chinese School before going to the National Junior College . After graduating from Junior College in 1980, he studied medicine at the National University of Singapore . He was the president of the NUS Student Union for two terms and later served as chairman of the union council. After completing his studies, he decided to pursue a postgraduate specialization in ophthalmology and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh in 1991 . From 1993 to 1995 he worked as an ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London for two years before deciding to return to Singapore to work at the Singapore National Eye Center and the National University Hospital . He was also the executive director of the Singapore General Hospital . He served in the Singapore Armed Forces from 1999 to 2002 .

Balakrishnan's political career began in 2001 as a member of the PAP for the constituency of Holland-Bukit Panjang , which he still represents today. In 2002, Balakrishnan was appointed Minister of State in the Ministry of National Development. From 2004 to 2011 he served as Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports in Lee Hsien Loong's cabinet . From 2004 to 2008 he was also chairman of the PAP youth organization (Young PAP). Finally, on May 21, 2011, he was appointed Minister of Environment and Water Resources after defending his constituency in the 2011 general election .

After the general election in 2015 , Balakrishnan was finally promoted to foreign minister. From February 25 to April 5, 2019, he was also Minister of Transport.

Personal

He is married to Joy Balakrishnan and is the father of a daughter and three sons.
