A total of 87 seats

The 2011 general election in Singapore took place on May 7th. In this 16th election to the Singaporean parliament , 87 new seats were awarded.

backgrounds

This choice was remarkable for two reasons. On the one hand, there was a generation change. 24 new candidates ran for the PAP, replacing numerous older parliamentarians. On the other hand, for the first time in the history of the state since independence, it was possible to vote for an opposition party in all but one of the constituencies.

The Aljunied GRC is the first constituency for group representation to have been won by an opposition party other than the PAP since 1988. Later Punggol East fell to the Workers' Party . The PAP did not return to power on nomination day, but only on election day. 2011 was also the year it had the highest number of contested seats since independence to ensure that there were first competitions in Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC and Holland-Bukit Timah GRC and the only constituency remained unchallenged - namely Tanjong Pagar GRC , in which Lee Kuan Yew was constituency.

In the next election, Punggol East SMC also joined the Workers' Party , but came back to PAP two years later. But immediately after the election, both Lee Kuan Yew and Goh Chok Tong withdrew from the cabinet. Lee Kuan Yew became a former Prime Minister , while Goh Chok Tong became Emeritus Senior Minister .

2011 result

Since the voting in Singapore is based on the principle of a simple majority , the distribution of seats is as follows:

Political party be right Seats

Workers' Party of Singapore (WP) 258.141 7th
National Solidarity Party (NSP) 242,369 0
Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) 97.239 0
Reform Party (Reform) 86,174 0
Singapore People's Party (SPP) 62.504 0

total 2,012,976 87
Invalid votes 44,714
Non-voters 292.913
Total number of voters 2,350,873

In the constituency of Potong Pasir, which has been in the opposition for several elections, Lina Chiam , the representative of the SPP, missed the victory by 115 votes. The turnout was 87.5%. This is very little as voting is compulsory in Singapore.

annotation

  1. The percentages of the NSP, the SPP and the SDA are displayed in a distorted way, because they ran as an alliance in the SDA in the last election.
