Goh Chok Tong ( Chinese  吳作棟  /  吴作栋 , Pinyin Wú Zuòdòng ; born May 20, 1941 in Pasir Panjang , Singapore ) was Prime Minister of Singapore from November 26, 1990 to August 12, 2004 and was Secretary General of the People's Action Party (PAP ). He was the second prime minister in the history of Singapore after Lee Kuan Yew , and was succeeded by Lee Hsien Loong .

Life

Tong attended the Raffles Institution, Singapore from 1955 to 1960 . He then attended the University of Singapore (today: National University of Singapore) until 1964, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts with honors first class in economics. In 1966 and 1967 he studied at Williams College in the USA , where he received a Master of Arts degree in development economics.

As early as 1964 he was appointed Administration Officer in China. In 1966 he joined Sep Neptune Orient Lines as a planning and project manager, became a member of the board of directors for finance and was managing director from November 1973 to September 1977. After a total of eight years, he left the company. Since 1976 he has been a member of the Marine Parade GRC. He became the Chief Minister of State for Finance in 1977. As Minister of Industry and Trade, Health and Defense, in 1979 he was responsible for various business areas. From 1985 he was elected as Vice Prime Minister and Defense Minister. He was appointed Prime Minister of Singapore from November 1990 to August 2004. His deputy prime ministers were Lee Hsien Loong , for the full term, and from 1995 Tony Tan Keng Yam . From 2004 to 2011 he was Chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore .

Goh Chok Tong is a lawyer by profession, as is his wife Tan Choo Leng. Both have a twin son and daughter.
