Richard Hu

Richard Hu Tsu Tau (occasionally Richard Hu Tsu Tao ) (born October 30, 1926 in Singapore ) is a former Singaporean politician of the People's Action Party (PAP). From May 1985 to November 2001 he was Treasury Secretary and Director of the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation for 16 years . He is the son of doctor Hu Tsai Kuen.

Early life

Richard Hu Tsu Tau was educated at an Anglo-Chinese school. Hu received his Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from the University of California in the United States in 1952, and then earned a postgraduate degree and PhD in chemical engineering from the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom in 1957 . From 1957 to 1960 he taught at the University of Manchester .

Career

After Hu returned home in 1960, he joined the Shell group of companies and served as chairman and general manager of the global company in Singapore from 1977 to 1983.

In 1983, Hu resigned from Shell and became General Manager of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation (GIC). He held both positions until 1984.

Three cabinet ministers, Lee Kuan Yew, Goh Keng Swee and Goh Chok Tong persuaded Hu to enter politics. In 1984 he ran as a PAP member for the Crete Ayer Single Member Constituency and won the parliamentary elections in Singapore in 1984 . After the elections, he was appointed Minister of Trade and Industry and in 1985 moved to the Ministry of Finance for 16 years. He was also Minister of Health from 1985 to 1987 and Minister of National Development from 1992 to 1993. As finance minister, Hu gained most notoriety for the publication of the "Schiff" series, which he issued after his appointment as legal tender. He also introduced taxes on goods and services in 1993. As part of the deregulation and reform of the finance and banking sector, Hu oversaw the privatization of the state postal savings bank (POSB) and the sale of the POSB to the Development Bank of Singapore (DBS) in 1998 .

On April 13, 2004, Hu joined the board of the Singaporean real estate development company CapitaLand and was elected chairman on the same day. He worked there until his retirement in 2012. In addition, Hu was also chairman of GIC Real Estate Pte Ltd and Asia Financial Holdings Pte Ltd , and Director of Government of Singapore Investment Corporation (GIC) and Director of Buildfolio.Com.Inc . Hu also served as Chancellor of Singapore Management University from July 2002 to August 2010 .

In 2001, Hu retired from politics. In 2013, Hu was named a Senior Advisor to Fraser and Neave .

family

Hu is married to Irene Tan Dee Leng and has a son named Jeremy and a daughter named Geraldine. He is a Hakka Chinese.
