The Management University of Singapore (English Singapore Management University ; abbreviation SMU) is an economics-oriented university in Singapore . The SMU is consistently one of the world's best universities for economics and is represented for the first time in the top 50 of the Financial Times MBA ranking 2018 as the highest newcomer.

history

In 1997 the Singapore government considered establishing a third university in Singapore. Ho Kwon Ping, a Singaporean entrepreneur, was named chairman of the task force that determined that the new facility would follow the American higher education system with more flexible broad-based education. After a review of student business schools to serve as role models for the SMU, the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in the United States emerged as the best candidate. The Wharton-SMU Agreement was signed in February 1999, followed by the collaboration between the Wharton-SMU Research Center in June.

In 2000, the SMU found its first home at the former Raffles College (the Bukit Timah campus of the National University of Singapore ) on Evans Road near the Hwa Chong Institution . On the campus, which opened for the first time in 1929, there were already several facilities before the SMU. In 2001, the SMU upgraded and occupied the main campus, balancing the need for modernization and refurbishment with facilities while preserving the heritage of colonial architecture. From 2001 to 2004 Ronald Frank was the second president of the SMU and was replaced by Howard Hunter.

Between 2000 and 2005 four schools, their library and three competence centers were founded at the SMU and the first part of the pupils graduated. Then the SMU was relocated to the Bras Basah district.

In 2010, Yong Pung How and Arnoud De Meyer took over the positions of Chancellor and President of the SMU from Richard Hu and Howard Hunter. and President In 2015, JY Pillay replaced Yong as Chancellor of SMU, while Lily Kong replaced De Meyer as President of SMU in January 2019. Lim Chee Onn succeeded JY Pillay as Chancellor in August 2019.

Faculties and Centers

  • Lee Kong Chian School of Business
  • School of Accountancy
  • Faculty of Economics (School of Economics)
  • Faculty of Social Sciences
  • Faculty of Information Systems (School of Information Systems)
  • Faculty of Law (School of Law)
  • UOB-SMU Entrepreneurship Alliance Center

Six of the seven buildings are connected by an underground corridor called Concourse, which is open to the public and lined with shops. The campus was designed by two teams of architects, with Cox Architects and Planners and DEG Architects responsible for the administration building and Edward Cullinan Architects and KNTA Architects designed the rest.

Classroom facilities include seminar rooms, classrooms, computer labs, and group work rooms that students use for project discussions. There are research institutions all over the university. Sports facilities are limited on campus due to space constraints. However, the university has a swimming pool, gym, and multi-purpose sports hall equipped with a rock wall. The university has campus-wide WiFi networks.

The youngest building on campus is the School of Law, which officially opened in March 2017. A key feature of the new building is the Kwa Geok Choo Law Library , named in memory of attorney Kwa Geok Choo, whose wife was Singapore's first prime minister, Lee Kuan Yew . The 2,600-square-meter Kwa Geok Choo Law Library takes on an architectural form of its own, reminiscent of a pearl. It can accommodate more than 500 people and is equipped with modern technology. Inside the School of Law building are the David Marshall Moot Court, the SMU Pro Bono Center, and other research centers.

The university rented the former MPH building, which housed the MPH Group's former flagship store until 2003 , at the intersection of Stamford Road and Armenian Street from mid-2015 to mid-2019 to house the SMU Labs. This provided collaborative learning space for the university's newest learning experiment, SMU-X, in which lessons are focused on solving real-world problems through projects. The Tahir Foundation's new Connexion building, built as a bridge between the School of Law and the School of Accountancy, will serve as the permanent residence of the SMU-X and SMU labs in late 2019.

School of Accountancy

The School of Accountancy (SOA) was launched in 2001 with the Bachelor of Accountancy (BAcc) as the only offer. In 2005 the school launched the Master of Professional Accounting (MPA) program for professionals with no degree in accounting. Both the SMU MPA and the BAcc are with the Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants (ISCA), the Chartered Accountant of Singapore, the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA), the CPA Australia, the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW).

Lee Kong Chian School of Business

The Lee Kong Chian School of Business (LKCSB) is considered to be the founding school of the SMU and opened its doors in August 2000 to a pioneering line of Bachelor of Business Management (BBM) students. The school was named after the philanthropist Lee Kong Chian .

The school offers the Master of Science in Applied Finance (China), a cooperation between the SMU and the Wang Yanan Institute for the Study of Economics (WISE) at the University of Xiamen, and the Master of Science in Communication Management (MCM) in partnership with Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) and with 10 days at the UCLA Anderson School of Management. The latest program, offering the Master of Human Capital Leadership (MHCL), has been accredited by the Chartered Institute of Personal & Development, and students are attending the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School for their overseas segment.

The school also offers a doctorate in business administration with a focus on Finance, Organizational Behavior and Human Resources (OBHR), Marketing, Strategy and Organization, Operations Management, or General Management.

School of Economics

The School of Economics (SOE) was founded in July 2002 as part of what was then the School of Economics and Social Sciences (SESS). After the reorganization, the university's economics faculty was separated from the social sciences in order to establish its own school. This reorganization was widely accepted as an informed decision, as the SOE curriculum was modeled on that of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania , rather than following the traditional social science business curriculum found at most other institutions.

The SOE is now offering the Bachelor of Science (Economics) and Master of Science in Economics and Applied Economics courses. In 2007 the school also introduced a PhD in Economics program.

School of Information Systems

The School of Information Systems (SIS) was founded with help from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) when SMU and CMU formed a four-year strategic partnership to leverage the expertise of the CMU faculty in the school's creation. Through this partnership, CMU supported SIS in building and developing the Information Systems Management bachelor's degree, including the establishment of the SMU-CMU flagship fast-track program, which enables SIS students to graduate in four and a half years make years with a bachelor's degree from SMU and a master's degree from CMU. In 2007, both universities agreed on an extension of four years. The CMU is now supporting the development and growth of the SIS advanced training offer. As part of this agreement, the two universities also increased their focus on joint research efforts that led to joint faculty research, funded projects, and doctoral student interaction.

SIS offers the Master of Science in Information Systems, the Master of IT in Business (MITB) and the PhD in Information Systems in addition to its Bachelor of Science program. The Master of IT in Business (MITB) expands the range of Analytics and Financial Services Analytics with the online program HBX Credential of Readiness (CORe) from Harvard Business School . The SMU is the first educational institution in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to include HBX (CORe) in its master’s program.

School of Law

The School of Law (SOL) is the SMU's smallest school with an annual intake of around 180 students. The founding of SOL was announced in August 2007. SOL previously existed as the legal department of the Lee Kong Chian School of Business at SMU, chaired by Andrew Phang. Its current dean is Goh Yihan, who succeeded Yeo Tiong Min in July 2017.

The SOL offers the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) as a basic course as well as an American Juris Doctor (JD). The school also offers a Master of Laws (LLM) program with the option of a dual LLM at Queen Mary University of London .

School of Social Sciences

The School of Social Sciences (SOSS) was founded in July 2002 as part of what was then the School of Economics and Social Sciences (SESS). Due to a reorganization in 2007, the School of Economics and the School of Social Sciences were separated to form independent schools within the SMU. The primary offering of the SOSS is the Bachelor of Social Science, a multidisciplinary undergraduate program. Three majors are offered within this program, namely Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology. In addition, the SOSS offers a doctorate in psychology.

SMU Hostel

The SMU Hostel , known as SMU Residences @ Prinsep , is located on Prinsep Street . The hostel was created through the renovation of three government-donated Housing and Development Boards . The hostel took in its first residents in December 2006 and officially opened in February 2007. Approx. 250 residents can be accommodated in the hostel buildings. Priority is given to international students, most of whom live in various private homes across the island.

The university also rents rooms from a dorm on Commonwealth Drive. These are open to 212 full-time SMU students (from the 2nd year), exchange students and full-time postgraduates who are planning to study full-time at the SMU for the coming academic year. The hostel is close to Holland Village, known for its cosmopolitan selection of restaurants and cafes.

SMU also has 20 units in the Mount Sophia Settlement that are available for rent and are intended for faculty and staff and their families, especially those moving to Singapore from overseas or on visits of months or more.

traffic

The SMU is connected via these two MRT stations - Bras Basah and Bencoolen . It is in close proximity and is not connected to what would otherwise be connected as an exchange. Bras Basah (modern spelling: Beras Basah) means "wet rice" in Malay - Beras means harvested rice without a shell, and Basah means wet rice.

Bras Basah is also connected by the two roads - Bras Basah Road and Stamford Road - and has been bypassing traffic along the Fort Canning Tunnel since January 16, 2007 .
