The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (dt about. Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh ), abbreviated RCSEd , was founded in 1505 and is the oldest surgeons association in the world. It is under the patronage of the Duke of Edinburgh (since 1955 Prince Philip ).

History and task

Former Old Surgeons' Hall , built in 1697

In 1505 the City Council of Edinburgh granted the Scottish field guards and barbers self-government with the task of ensuring "the highest possible standards in surgery". Their maintenance and further development, as well as training and further education in the operational subjects, have since been the central task of the RCSEd. The examination program for the fellowship ("the test") is sophisticated and "rigorous": Up to 80% of candidates from all over the world fail in the complex examination stages.

The college encompasses and represents not only all surgical subjects, but also dentistry , oral surgery , ophthalmology , gynecology and obstetrics, and ENT medicine . The Surgeon is published with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland . Above all, it makes general surgical contributions.

The college was founded as a craft guild. The academic physicians therefore initially addressed his members disparagingly as Mister . This later gave rise to the tradition of address that is still alive today. Those who are not fellows remain (disrespectfully meant) a doctor .

meaning

The RCSEd is considered the most international of the four Colleges of Surgeons in the United Kingdom (the others are the Royal College of Surgeons of England , the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow ). It has about 13,000 fellows , one third each in the UK, Australia and the Commonwealth . In India and more and more in the Far East and Africa, the advanced training programs are considered exemplary. The Membership ( Part I ) and Fellowship ( Part II of the tests) are prerequisites surgical careers.

The innovation and adaptability of the RCSEd are renowned around the world. The databases, the access to information via the website, the continuous medical education , the controls of trainers and training courses, the library, the archive and last but not least the collection of anatomical specimens and surgical instruments are unparalleled.

The college had a turnover of £ 16.2 million in 2014 . Income exceeded expenses.
