João Freitas da Câmara (born June 24, 1955 in Lepo , Portuguese Timor ) is an East Timorese diplomat. Since 2016 he has been East Timor's first ambassador based in Myanmar .

Career

Câmara was initially political assistant in the Indonesian sub-district administration of Same . In 1981 he received a scholarship from Atmajaya University in Jakarta . Here Câmara became an activist of the Resistência Nacional dos Estudantes de Timor-Leste (RENETIL), a student resistance movement of the East Timorese in exile against the Indonesian occupation of East Timor. In October 1986 he and other activists asked for political asylum at the Dutch embassy . There he received a Portuguese passport. After the Santa Cruz massacre in 1991, he organized a demonstration in front of the office of the representative of the United Nations in Jakarta on November 19 , the first of its kind in the Indonesian capital. Câmara was arrested and prosecuted and sentenced him to 13 years imprisonment for subversion . The sentence was then 10 years in prison. He was sent to Cipinang Prison in Jakarta. On December 23, 1999, Câmara was pardoned under a general amnesty.

In independent East Timor, Câmara was hired at the country's Foreign Ministry and headed the legal affairs and contracts department. From 2006 to 2008 he was Secretary General in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of East Timor. From 2008 to 2012, Câmara was East Timor's first ambassador to Thailand . He then returned to East Timor and served as Director General for External Relations until 2014 and as Director General of the Asia and Pacific Department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs until 2016. The appointment as ambassador to Myanmar by President Taur Matan Ruak took place on February 11, 2016, the accreditation took place on April 27, 2016.

Câmara is married and has five children.
