Cipinang Detention Center
The Cipinang Detention Center ( Indonesian Lembaga Pemasyarakatan Cipinang ) is a maximum security prison in the Indonesian capital Jakarta . It is located in Cipinang (Pulo Gadung) in East Jakarta .
history
The prison dates back to the end of the Dutch colonial era . While Indonesian independence activists were initially imprisoned here, opponents of the regime and independence fighters from East Timor and West Papua came behind bars in Cipinang after Indonesia's independence . The majority, however, are criminals without a political background. 70% sit because of drug offenses (as of 2014). 64 inmates (as of 2014) were convicted as terrorists.
criticism
In 2007 there was fighting between rival prisoner clans. Two prisoners died and five were seriously injured. Machetes and other knives were found among the inmates. As in other prisons in Indonesia, drugs and HIV infection are a massive problem in Cipinang. At that time, 4,000 people were detained in the detention center; it is only designed for 1,500 prisoners.
In an Amnesty study around 2013, around 81% of prisoners said they had been tortured.
