Muchtar Pakpahan Bebas (* 21st December 1953 in Bah Jambi II , Tanah Jawa , Simalungun , North Sumatra , Indonesia ) is an Indonesian trade union leader who founded the first independent trade union in the country. Muchtar currently works as an attorney with the law firm Muchtar Pakpahan Associates and teaches at the Law Faculty of Universitas Kristen Indonesia (UKI).

Career

Muchtar Pakpahan is the son of Sutan Johan Pakpahan and Victoria Silalahi. The father was a farm worker who became the successful manager of the village plantation. After graduating from high school, the Malari incident , a student revolt of 1974, inspired him to become active in Christian youth organizations such as the Student Senate of the Law Faculty of North Sumatra University and the board of the Indonesian Christian Student Movement in Medan . Muchtar Pakpahan graduated in 1978 and took two oaths to God. He wanted to spend the rest of his life defending and doing justice to the poor and making his son a priest.

Muchtar Pakpahan opened a law firm in Medan. Most of his clients were small and poor people, like workers and peasants. Muchtar Pakpahan made little profit from these cases, which earned him the charge of being a communist.

After the Santa Cruz massacre in East Timor , Muchtar Pakpahan also sided with the country that has been occupied by Indonesia since 1975. In 1995 he published his book "The Portrait of Indonesia", in which he reported on the situation in East Timor.

In 1992 Muchtar Pakpahan founded the country's only independent trade union, the Indonesian Workers Welfare Union. Until 2003 he was its chairman. Muchtar Pakpahan was arrested in 1994 for allegedly organizing a strike. He was released on May 20, 1995. He said he was dragged, stripped and threatened with death while in prison. In 1996 Muchtar Pakpahan was arrested again for "subversive activities", but was one of the first political prisoners to be released on May 26, 1998 after the resignation of the dictator Suharto . In the detention center, Cipinang Muchtar Pakpahan was also the leader of the East Timorese resistance movement , Xanana Gusmão imprisoned.

family

Muchtar Pakpahan had been married to Rosintan Marpaung, a teacher at the Jakarta State University, since November 17, 1979 . She was the daughter of Nicolaus Marpaung, a retired police officer, and Maria Pasaribu. The daughter Ruth Damai Hati (Iyuth) was born in 1985. The son Binsar Pakpahan became a pastor, the other son Johannes Darta, a lawyer.

Muchtar Pakpahan has a sister and three brothers.

Awards

In 2014 Muchtar Pakpahan received the Medal of the Ordem de Timor-Leste from East Timor's President Taur Matan Ruak .
