history

The fact that Aborigines have lived in this area for millennia is testimony to historical rubbish pits and clam and snail shells to the west of Peterborough. According to oral tradition of the Aboriginal tribe of the Kirrae-Wurrong , there was a massacre of Aborigines, with the men being driven off the cliff and the fleeing women and children being killed in the nearby swamp. This happened in Massacre Bay , part of the Bay of Martyrs .

It is believed that the place was formed when the schooner SS Schomburg was shipwrecked on what is now known as Schomburg Rock off the coast in 1855 . Some of the people who came to see the wreck are said to have settled there. A post office was not set up until April 10, 1890.

In the coastal area of Peterborough other ships went down over the years, such as the schooner Young Australia in 1877 , with no human life to be complained about and five years later one kilometer east of the Newfield , with several men and the captain killed and in the cemetery of Port Campbell were buried. The Falls of Halladale ran aground in heavy fog in 1908 and was lost along with its cargo.

today
