Mount Beauty

Mount Beauty is a city in the northeast of the Australian state of Victoria . It is located on the upper reaches of the Kiewa River and in the Alpine Shire Local Government Area .

history

The city was established in 1949 by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria as a housing estate for workers on the Kiewa River hydropower project. After construction work ended in 1967, the settlement was subordinated to the Local Government Area.

The first post office opened in Tawonga South (north of town) on April 15, 1943 and in Mount Beauty itself on February 17, 1947. Post offices called Camp No. 2, Camp No. 4, and Camp No. 5 were located it in the period from 1949 to 1953.

climate

The weather is very dependent on the seasons. Winter is icy, spring cool, summer scorching hot and autumn colorful.

Events and leisure

Each season has its own attractions: skiing, hiking, horseback riding, paragliding, cycling and mountain biking, and fishing. Every year in January there is a paragliding competition, the Bogong Cup .

Mount Beauty and the neighboring community of Dederang (approx. 40 km north) have an Australian football team Dederang-Mount Beauty , which plays in the Tallangatta & District Football League .

Golfers can play at Mount Beauty Golf Club on Tawonga Crescent .

Mount Beauty has its own music festival, mountain bike competitions and regular weekend markets on the first Sunday of each month. In the area around the city there are also a number of dirt roads that can be used by off-road drivers.

The city offers great views of the mountains, such as B. Mount Bogong . Mount Beauty also offers trips to the Falls Creek Ski Resort 20 miles southeast and the Bogong High Plains . The southern end of town also has plenty of ski rental shops and bus companies that offer day trips to Falls Creek.
