The Otway Ranges are a mountainous country in the Great Dividing Range , which is located in the south of the village of Colac in Victoria , Australia .
The hill country emerged at the end of the Tertiary 45 million years ago and rose to its present height. The bones of dinosaurs were found in the chalk deposits .
The mountains are covered by rainforests, including ( Acacia melanoxylon ), a tree that can grow up to 100 meters high, and ferns like Dicksonia antarctica .
After a railway line was built, wood was felled in this area and transported away.
Great Otway National Park , which today includes the former Angahook-Lorne , Carlisle and Melba Gully State Parks, as well as other state forests and crown land, extends in the mountains .
