The Cape Otway Lighthouse is the former lighthouse on Cape Otway in Victoria , Australia . It is the longest operating in Australia and after the Macquarie Lighthouse the second lighthouse ever built on the main Australian coastline.
The tower is at the western exit of Bass Street . Due to its remoteness, it was only possible to build it in the third attempt overland in 1848. It is built from natural stones that were quarried in a quarry on the Parker River, five kilometers away .
The first lighthouse keeper was suspended again after three months. His successor, however, stayed for 30 years. His son George Ford became known when he on a horse after Camperdown rode to help there for the July 1, 1878 in front of Loch Ard Gorge defunct clipper Loch Ard to pick.
The lighthouse was difficult to reach from land until the 1930s. Only then was a connection with automobiles possible.
Red signal light has been broadcast since 1881. The main light was amplified in 1891, 1905 and 1939. The beacon was replaced by a smaller one below the old lighthouse in January 1994.
