Australian Maritime Safety Authority
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA; German " Australian Seesicherheitsbehörde " ) is an Australian authority especially for the rescue is responsible. It is the responsible organization subordinate to the Commonwealth of Australia , which is responsible for the regulation and safe conduct of the Australian shipping fleet as well as for international maritime affairs. The AMSA is financed by taxes from the shipping industry.
tasks
The marine safety tasks of the AMSA are:
- Provision of marine navigational aids , such as B. the monitoring of the lighthouses
- Guaranteeing the seaworthiness and security of Australian and foreign vessels in Australian waters
- Supervision and implementation of the certification of seafaring
- Guarantee of maritime emergency aid and secure communication channels
- Coordination of the headquarters of the Australian sea rescue system as well as coordination of search and rescue operations for civil aviation and shipping
- The development of safe seagoing vessels as well as legal and organizational systems
The AMSA supports marine protection through:
- Creation of programs for the protection and restoration of environmental damage caused by ship emergencies and accidents and the
- Implement the Australia National Plan to Combat Oil Contaminated Water and Other Hazardous and Toxic Substances.

As part of the search for the missing Malaysia Airlines flight 370 , the AMSA coordinated the search in March 2014 in the sea area west of Australia.
