Angier March Perkins was born the second son of Jacob Perkins , a well-known mechanical engineer and inventor. He initially lived in Boston and New York. In 1814 the family moved to Philadelphia. In 1821 he followed his father with the family to London, where they lived at 69 Fleet Street. Together with his father, he carried out development work on banknote production and the use of high-pressure steam. He took over and improved some of his father's developments for central heating, resigned from his father's business and founded his own business in 1830 as a heating and steam engineer in Harpur Street, London . In 1832, based on his father's experiments, he developed a heater in which 200 ° C hot water was fed through thin pipes. Originally, surplus shotgun barrels were used for this .

In 1831 he married Julia Georgina Brown († 1850 in Hendon, Middlesex) in St. George the Martyr Church in Queens Square, Bloomsbury. In 1835 he took over his father's business.

Angier March Perkins made significant technical advances in the area of steam pressure equipment, particularly in the area of central heating, many of which he installed in Great Britain, including in the Bank of England , the elephant house in the Zoological Gardens in Regent's Park , greenhouses in the Royal Botanic Gardens (Kew ) and in churches. Some of these heaters are still in operation today (as of 2010).

Perkins also succeeded in making the principle of heat transport through water in a closed pipe system usable for other applications. The heating of ovens with tubes in which steam was heated and held up to a pressure of over 130 bar represented a step forward. The reason for this development was the establishment of a new bakery in the neighborhood, which Perkins had commissioned with installation work. Baking ovens became an important business area for Baker Perkins, which is still active in this area today. Marketing turned out to be sluggish at first, the ovens were mainly used by the military.

In 1853 he founded the Bacon & Perkins company in London together with the architect JL Bacon .

Another application for making paper from pulp using high pressure and high temperatures was discontinued after a major explosion in 1873 that destroyed the plant and equipment.

After his death in 1881, his son Loftus Perkins took over the business.

Angier March Perkins held approximately 14 patents.
