Ambonnay is surrounded by the neighboring communities Verzy and Trépail in the north, Vaudemanges in the east and northeast, Isse in the east, Condé-sur-Marne in the south, Tours-sur-Marne in the southwest, Bouzy in the west and Val-de-Livre in the northwest.
