history

The Villa Ambonnay was first mentioned in 1020 in the Cartulaire de la Trinité de Châlons . In 1179 Thibaut de Rivelart sold the lordly Ambonnay area to the chapter of the Cathedral of Châlons-en-Champagne , who together with the St-Denis Abbey owned the area until the French Revolution . The Abbey of St-Denis received the right of patronage through the amalgamation of the parishes of Isse and Ambonnay.

The church was formerly dedicated to St. Remigius . Later the church was dedicated to St. Dedicated to Réol de Reims because relics of the saint were confirmed there in 1672. A rib of Saint Réol was given by the monks of the Hautvillers Abbey to the parish of Ambonnay, which celebrated the translation of the relic every year on June 30th . Saint Réol was celebrated there on November 25th as well as in the Orbais Monastery , which was founded by Réol.

The Romanesque church from the 12th century was placed under monument protection on February 7, 1922 as a classified Monument historique .

architecture

The Romanesque nave was formerly covered by a timbered vault from the second half of the 12th century. The original bell tower is still today next to the choir.

The choir window, made by Jean Mauret in the third quarter of the 20th century , represents a vineyard.
