Rieul of Reims
Rieul of Reims (also Reolus, Réol, Regulus, Rigulus ; † 698 ) was from 672 or 673 to at least 689 bishop of Reims .
Rieul came from a Frankish noble family and married Amathilde, a daughter of the Merovingian king Childerich II , with whom he had several children. After his wife's death, he entered 662 in the Benedictine - monastery Hautvillers one, but later went into the monastery Rebais (Rebascum) in the diocese of Meaux . In 672 or 673 he succeeded his relative, St. Nivard , as the 26th Bishop of Reims. He founded the Orbais monastery ( Dorbacense monasterium ) near Épernay in Champagne in around 680Northern France , to which he called monks from Rebais, took part in 689 at the council in Rouen under St. Ansbert of Rouen , died in 698 and was later canonized . His relics are in Orbais.
The church of St-Réol in Ambonnay in the Marne department is dedicated to him.
