Avenay-Val-d'Or (Latin Avenniacum ) is a French commune with 1,026 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Marne department in the Grand Est region . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Épernay and the Canton of Épernay-1 . Avenay-Val-d'Or is a member of the Communauté de communes de la Grande Vallée de la Marne . The municipality is located in the Montagne de Reims Regional Nature Park .
history
Avenay has been settled since Roman times. Saint Bertha von Avenay, who according to tradition was related by marriage to the Merovingian family, founded the Benedictine abbey Avenay here in 660 , which was completely demolished during the French Revolution .

Attractions
The church of St. Trésain, whose current architecture dates from the 13th to 16th centuries, contains relics and works of art from the former abbey .
Personalities
Avenay-Val-d'Or is the home of Medievalists Paulin Paris (1800–1881) and his son Gaston Paris (1839–1903), both members of the Collège de France , Gaston Paris also a member of the Académie française .
