Euvy (1793-1800 with the spelling Oeuvy ) is a French commune with 83 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Marne department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Champagne-Ardenne ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement Épernay and the municipality association Sud Marnais founded in 1998 . The inhabitants are called Euvyots .

geography

The municipality of Euvy is located 25 kilometers east of Sézanne , 40 kilometers southwest of Châlons-en-Champagne and about 120 kilometers east of Paris in the Champagne sèche , the "dry Champagne". The municipality of Euvy has no surface watercourses. It lies on the watershed between the river systems of the Marne to the east and the Seine to the west. In the extreme southwest, the municipality touches the Maurienne rivulet , which dries up in hot summers, but when it rains heavily, it absorbs the water of the Euvy municipality's gently sloping ground relief and discharges it over the Superbe to the Aube . The municipal area of 14.43 km² is almost treeless and characterized by large fields on mostly flat terrain. Euvy is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Fère-Champenoise in the north, Connantray-Vaurefroy in the east, Gourgançon in the south and Corroy in the west.

history

The place first appeared in 1114 under the Latin name Capella Aquatici .

Euvy was hit several times by mercenaries passing through. In 1814, 21 villagers died when Cossacks persecuted Napoleonic troops. In 1940 40 soldiers died in fighting here after the population had been evacuated.

In 1880 a large dairy was founded in Euvy. It was moved to Fère-Champenoise in 1950 . The dairy in Euvy had the first telephone and the first car in the village.

By a decree of the prefecture of August 10, 1931, wines produced in Euvy could carry the protected designation of origin Zone d'Appellation Champagne in the Champagne wine-growing region , which would entitle the production of the base wines for champagne . But there are no vines in the community - the almost steppe-like flat landscape does not allow successful viticulture here. The field name les Vignes ( the vines ) in the south-east of the municipality suggests that there was viticulture in an earlier, wetter climatic period. Today the next winery is about 20 kilometers northwest in Allemant (Côte de Sézanne wine region).

Population development

In 1836 Euvy reached its highest population with 312 inhabitants.
