Mœurs-Verdey (1793-1801 with the spelling Moeurs and Meurs ) is a French commune with 319 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Marne department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Champagne-Ardenne ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement Épernay and the municipality association Sézanne-Sud Ouest Marnais, founded in 2016 . The inhabitants are called Mœursiens .

geography

The municipality of Mœurs-Verdey is located about 50 kilometers southwest of Épernay , 65 kilometers northwest of Troyes and about 90 kilometers east of Paris on the upper reaches of the Grand Morin River in the western part of the Champagne sèche , the "dry Champagne". The area is characterized by rolling hills covered by large fields. The terrain is unsuitable for viticulture, although in the eastern and south-eastern neighboring towns there are vineyards of the Côte de Sézanne wine-growing region within the Champagne wine-growing region . In the south of the municipal area of Mœurs-Verdey there is a smaller forest area ( La Fosse aux Loups ). In addition to the villages of Mœurs and Verdey , the municipality also consists of the hamlets of Les Bordes and Villiers . Mœurs-Verdey is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Les Essarts-lès-Sézanne in the north, Lachy in the northeast, Sézanne in the east, Vindey in the southeast, Le Meix-Saint-Epoing in the south and La Noue in the west.

history

The small village of Verdey was owned by the Saint-Pierre de Montier-la-Celle monastery in Troyes from the end of the 13th century until the French Revolution . In Verdey, a watermill was operated on the Grand Morin. From 1838 onwards, fine mineral-rich sands were mined, which are well suited for glass production. Two opticians from Paris, Louis-Jean-Baptiste Berthiot (1807-1857) and his father-in-law Pierre-Alexis Bourot (1796-1851) therefore settled here. The mayor obtained the closure of the glass factory from the prefect of the Marne department because the river Grand Morin was too polluted and the horses could no longer be watered there. The manufacture moved to the Saint-Hubert mill at the western entrance to the small town of Sézanne in 1846 and still exists today. The 12th-century Romanesque church of Saint-Martin in Mœurs and its 16th-century chapel have been thoroughly restored after the discovery of a 7x3m fresco from the 16th century in 2012. Several other paintings adorn the walls of the church ( Fleurs de Lys , St. Nicholas , etc.). These as well as an altar stone and some grimace heads (masks) at the end of the frame blocks in the choir and engraved architectural sketches on the walls of the nave have been listed as a historical monument since 2014.

The municipality in its current form was created in 1966 when the territory of the former municipality of Verdey was divided into the municipalities of Lachy, Les Essarts-lès-Sézanne and Mœurs.
