Attractions

  • The Saint-Genest church dates from the 12th and 13th centuries.
  • The Saint-Pierre-d'Oyes Monastery, also known as Saint-Gond Abbey or Saint-Gond Priory , was founded in 676 by Saint Gond (St. Godon), a nephew of Saint Wandrille ( Wandregisel ), and his followers. It was originally a simple community that was settled in the marshes of Oyes and gathered around a chapel dedicated to Saint Peter since 660. The monastery was destroyed by Norman invasions in the 9th century and rebuilt in the 10th century under the name Abbaye de Saint-Gond . In 1344 it lost its status as an abbey and became a priory again under the supervision of the Abbey of Montier-la-Celle ( Abbaye Saint-Pierre de Montier-la-Celle ). The priory slowly fell into disrepair and was dissolved in 1731. The abbey church was demolished in 1808. In 1891, during excavations, glazed tiles were found in the remains of the abbey. The monastery grounds became a farm, which German troops looted and burned down on September 8, 1914 during the Battle of the Saint-Gond Marshes. Today the remains of a monastery building have been restored and are used as a private country house.
