The Sportklub Niederösterreich St. Pölten (officially sponsored by spusu Sportklub Niederösterreich St. Pölten ), SKN St. Pölten for short , is a football club from St. Pölten whose first men's team plays in the Bundesliga , the highest Austrian division. The club 's women's team plays in the ÖFB Women's Bundesliga . The licensed players department is outsourced to SKN St. Pölten GmbH , of which the club is the sole partner.

history

The Lower Austria St. Pölten Sports Club was founded on July 6, 2000 after its unofficial predecessor, FCN St. Pölten , and its predecessor, VSE St. Pölten , dissolved. The new club took over the entire infrastructure, the stadium and also the patronage of the federal youth center from the FCN. By taking over the BNZ St. Pölten, the SKN was not classified in the last division, as is usual for a newly founded club, but was allowed to start in the 2nd regional league West, the fifth level.

Already in their first season, the team immediately achieved the championship title in the 2nd regional league and thus promotion to the fourth level. In the first regional league, the club was crowned national champion in the following season 2001/02 with the next title win and thus made it through to the regional league east. In the same game year, the SKN also made it to the final of the Lower Austrian Landescup, but had to admit defeat there against SC Theresienfeld.

In the Regionalliga, St. Pölten only reached tenth place in the table in the 2002/03 first season, but rose to fourth place the following year. In the 2004/05 season , the club finished sixth and reached the quarter-finals in the ÖFB Cup via SV Wörgl (3-0), Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz (2-1) and Austria Salzburg (5-1). In the surprise victory over the Bundesliga club from Salzburg on Voith-Platz, Helmut Prenner in particular stood out with three and Christoph Knaller with two goals. On April 27, 2005, St. Pölten had no chance against Austria Wien in the quarter-finals and was eliminated from the competition with a 6-0 defeat.

In the 2005/06 game year , the Lower Austrians fought for promotion to the First League until the end, but at the end of the season they lost one point to SC-ESV Parndorf 1919 . The declared goal in the 2006/07 season was promotion to the first division. After poor performance in autumn 2006 and some internal disputes, in the course of which the sporting director Markus Kernal was dismissed, this goal was dropped. In the winter break of 2006/2007, a number of regular players turned their backs on the club. The managing director Raphael Landthaler resigned at the end of November 2006 after differences of opinion with Anton Pfeffer. A few days before the start of training and after eight weeks of vacation, coach Walter Hörmann also resigned to become the sports coordinator of Sturm Graz . The new trainer was Martin Scherb , the work colleague of Supervisory Board member Anton Pfeffer . In the spring season, the SKN was surprisingly the second most successful team with a strongly rejuvenated team after Meister Schwadorf . The scandalous game against the prospective champions was remarkable, with three SKN players being excluded shortly before the end of the game after the highly controversial opening goal for Schwadorf . These were the only yellow / red or red cards for SKN players in the entire 2006/2007 season.

At the end of June 2007, chairman Christian Walter resigned his office completely surprisingly and the chairman of the supervisory board and former chairman Sepp Hintermeier took over his office. Officially, this was done for professional reasons. However, there are rumors that this change of chairman was requested or enforced by the state of Lower Austria, because just a few days after the change, Regional Councilor Petra Bohuslav clearly acknowledged the SKN St. Pölten and announced the construction of a new football stadium by 2011.

The goal for the 2007/2008 season was originally a place in the top five, as reaching the championship title was unrealistic due to the given framework conditions (very young and little experienced team) according to the club management before the season and some other teams, such as Vienna or Wiener Sportklub had a multiple of their budget available. Over the entire autumn 2007 season, however, very good performances were achieved and excellent results were achieved, which led to the fact that for a few rounds they even led the standings of the Regionalliga Ost. In the end, St. Pölten managed a series of 24 unbeaten games (20 wins, 4 draws) in championship and amateur in the period from April 27, 2007 (1: 2 against Schwadorf ) to November 9, 2007 (0: 1 at Vienna ) -Cup. Due to the defeat in the last game of the autumn season, the autumn championship title went to the main competitor FAC Team for Vienna and the spring season had to be tackled with two points behind.

The good performances of the autumn season could also be confirmed in the spring games 2008 and so St. Pölten fixed the championship title in the Regionalliga Ost and thus also the promotion to the first league two rounds before the end of the championship . This represents the greatest success in the club's history so far.

SKN St. Pölten was able to establish itself immediately in the first division and attracted attention with its good results. The greatest success was undoubtedly the 1-0 away win on October 31, 2008 at Bundesliga relegated FC Wacker Innsbruck , with which St. Pölten was also at the top of the table for two rounds. At the end of the autumn championship, the newcomer was able to achieve the excellent third place.

The young team was also able to convince several times in the spring round, and so the first season in the first division ended with 13 wins, 8 draws and 12 defeats and a goal difference of 51:46 in fifth place, which was excellent for a newcomer. The SKN St. Pölten was by far the best of the 3 climbers from the regional leagues.

The team in June 2010

In the 2009/10 season , the chosen path was continued with young players from the region; before the season, nine players from the youth academy were added to the squad of the fighting team. In terms of sport, the team was able to improve compared to the previous season and finished fourth in the first division with 51 points (14 wins, 9 draws and 10 defeats) and a goal difference of 44:42.

In addition, the plans for the new stadium in St. Pölten-Ratzersdorf were presented in autumn 2009 and a new board was elected in spring 2010.

The NV-Arena, which opened in 2011, is the home stadium of the SKN St. Pölten

After the start of construction on the NV Arena in March 2011, it only took about a year to finish. On July 7th, 2012 it was opened with a blitz tournament between SKN, Rapid Vienna and Sparta Prague .

On September 1st, 2013 SKN St. Pölten announced the leave of absence of trainer Martin Scherb . Under coach Scherb, who took up his post on January 7th, 2007, he won the championship title in the Regionalliga Ost in 2008 and was promoted to the first division. After Thomas Nentwich was appointed his interim successor, Gerald Baumgartner , who won the ÖFB Cup with FC Pasching in the 2012/13 season , was signed on September 5, 2013 .

Under Gerald Baumgartner, SKN St. Pölten was able to advance in the ÖFB Cup to the final, which they lost to FC Red Bull Salzburg 2: 4. In the first division, SKN St. Pölten took fourth place with 53 points. Due to the strong performances in the cup, especially coach Baumgartner came into the focus of clubs from the Bundesliga. At the end of May his move to Austria Wien was announced. The previous trainer from Austria Wien Herbert Gager was introduced on June 4, 2014 as a replacement . As a cup finalist, the Lower Austrians qualified for the second qualifying round of the Europa League , where the Austrian second division team met Bulgarian representative Botev Plovdiv , fourth in the 2013/14 Bulgarian championship. The St. Pöltner prevailed with a total score of 3: 2 and were the first Austrian second division team to make it to the next European Cup, in which the Lower Austrians played against the Dutch factory club PSV Eindhoven , fourth in the 2013/14 championship. The game in Eindhoven was lost 1-0. The second leg in the NV-Arena ended with a 3-2 victory for the guests. The SKN retired with a total score of 2: 4.

Champion of the first division and promoted to the Bundesliga 2016: SKN St. Pölten

In February 2016 in Mattersburg the promotion to the semifinals of the ÖFB-Pokal 2015/16 was fixed with a 2-1 success . The semi-finals were lost in Mödling, against Admira Wacker, with 1: 2. In the summer of 2016, he was promoted to the Bundesliga.

The club ended the Bundesliga season 2016/17 on the penultimate place in the table. In the 2017/18 season , coach Oliver Lederer was replaced by Dietmar Kühbauer on April 1st . Under him, the last three Bundesliga games were victorious. The relegation against the third of the first division, SC Wiener Neustadt , could be won 3: 1 (2: 0, 1: 1). Then SC Wiener Neustadt lodged a protest. In response, the SKN St. Pölten withdrew a previously given approval for the use of the NV Arena .

The original name "Sportklub Niederösterreich St. Pölten (SKN St. Pölten)" had been in use again since the 2010/11 season until it was expanded again in January 2019. Since then, the main sponsor, the mobile phone provider spusu , has officially appeared in the club name spusu Sportklub Niederösterreich St. Pölten and in the newly designed coat of arms.

According to the KSV, a comparatively large amount of money was spent on staff at 1.6 million euros. However, the numbers of the clubs are difficult to compare as different dates are often given. For the 2012/13 season they had a budget of 3.3 million euros (including 2 million sports budget including SKN Juniors, supervisors, etc., but without the St. Pölten Academy, which is not part of the club). The club stated the license budget for the 2013/14 season at 3.5 million euros. In the annual financial statements for the 2018/19 season, the club made a minus of 886,000 euros in equity. However, the association comes to an annual result after taxes of 19,000 euros plus.
