Herbert Gager (born September 18, 1969 in Vienna ) is a former Austrian soccer player and current soccer coach . From February to May 2014 he was the coach of the Austrian Bundesliga club FK Austria Wien .

During his playing career, the player, who was used variably in the defensive midfield or as a libero , was a specialist in set pieces .

Career as a player

After Gager had gone through all the youth departments at SK Rapid Vienna , he received a professional contract with the Austrian record champions in 1987 at the age of 18. Nevertheless, it was still a year before he was allowed to play his first championship appearance in the 2-2 draw at SK Vorwärts Steyr on September 10, 1988. Gager was substituted on by Otto Barić in the 64th minute for Reinhard Kienast .

On October 3, 1989, he made his debut in the U-21 national team in the friendly international match against Poland (0-0). Two years later he came to his first appearance in the senior team when he was used on October 16, 1991 by team boss Dietmar Constantini in the 1: 2 defeat in Northern Ireland . However, Gager's team career did not even last six months. On April 29, 1992, he was replaced in the 1-1 draw against Wales by team boss Ernst Happel in the 46th minute of play by Michael Baur and never called up again.

In addition, Gager's contract with SK Rapid Vienna was not extended in the summer of 1992 , so he moved to FC Linz . After only one season, he was signed by VfB Mödling , where he only stayed one season to move to FC Admira Wacker . Gager was able to really take off there. His performances were so impressive that in 1996 he was signed by city rivals Rapids, FK Austria Wien .

Via Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz and SC Untersiebenbrunn , for which he did not play any games, Gager's path led to the Greek club Skoda Xanthi . There he formed the control point in midfield together with the Austrian Jürgen Leitner . Under her direction, Skoda Xanthi was able to qualify for the UEFA Cup for the first time in club history in 2002 . Although Gager was offered a contract extension, he could no longer reap the success. Since his child started school, he did not accept the offer, but returned to Austria and ended his professional career.

Gager ended his active career with positions in the amateur field at FK Hollabrunn and SV Draßmarkt.

Even in the football "pension" Gager cannot leave the active football sport. He is involved and successful in futsal at Stella Rossa tipp3 . Most recently, on January 27, 2013, with two goals against Futsal Schwaz , Gager was instrumental in ensuring that FC Stella Rossa secured their 15th championship title in the club's history.

Career as a coach

One of the deciding factors for the end of Gager's professional career was that he received an offer as a junior supervisor at the Frank Stronach Academy , which enabled him to start his coaching career. There Gager worked his way up from the U-14 team to the U-19 team, which competed in an Austria-wide championship.

As a coach of the youth teams of FK Austria Wien, Gager was also significantly involved in the training of David Alaba and Aleksandar Dragović . Under Gager's leadership, both made the leap into the second team, which at the time was still playing in the first division . Alaba played nine games in the U-19 academy as a 15-year-old in the 2006/07 season. Also in the 2006/07 season Dragović was only 16 years old in eleven games under Gager.

After the coach of the second team ("amateurs") of FK Austria Wien, Thomas Janeschitz , left them for the ÖFB , Gager was offered the position. Since December 22, 2011, Gager has been training the team that plays its championship games in the Regionalliga Ost and whose task it is to transfer players from the youth field to the professional field.

After a mixed autumn season in 2013 and the disappointing spring start in 2014, Gager was appointed as the successor to Nenad Bjelica as coach of the first team of FK Austria Wien on February 16, 2014 . Gager's contract was initially valid until the end of the 2013/14 season. After missing a European Cup spot, the club announced that Gager's contract as head coach will not be renewed. However, he would like to remain with the club in a different capacity.

But Gager didn't want to go back to his old position as an amateur coach. Instead, he accepted the offer of the second division team SKN St. Pölten , after their coach Gerald Baumgartner had switched to the head coach position at Austria. On July 24, 2014 Herbert Gager achieved the greatest success in the St. Pölten club's history with a 2-0 home win against Botew Plovdiv in the second qualifying round for the Europa League . (In the third qualifying round the team then failed at PSV Eindhoven .) In the league, however, things went less well for SKN St. Pölten. After just 13 rounds, Herbert Gager was dismissed from the St. Pölten team in October 2014.
