The Austrian women's soccer championship was held for the 45th time in 2016/17 after the 35-year break between 1938 and 1972. The top division is the ÖFB Women's Bundesliga and was held for the 4th time. The second highest division ( 2nd division ), this season the 38th edition, was divided into two regional leagues, with the 2nd division middle / west for the 8th time and the 2nd division east / south for the 6th time . The season lasted from mid-August to mid-June.

Austrian football champion became SKN St. Pölten women for the third time in a row . The champions of the second highest division were FFC Vorderland (middle / west) and SKN St. Pölten Frauen II (east / south). In the relegation games, FFC Vorderland was able to prevail and was therefore entitled to play in the ÖFB Women's Bundesliga in the 2017/18 season .

    Second performance level - 2nd division

    The 2nd league represents the second highest performance group in Austrian women's football. In order to reduce the costs for the clubs, it is divided into two regional groups: 2nd league middle / west and 2nd league east / south.

    The second performance level consisted of two leagues, separated by region:

    • 2. League Middle / West with the clubs from Upper Austria ( OFV ), Salzburg ( SFV ), Tyrol ( TFV ) and Vorarlberg ( VFV ) and
    • 2. League East / South with the clubs from Burgenland ( BFV ), Carinthia ( KFV ), Lower Austria ( NÖFV ), Styria ( StFV ) and Vienna ( WFV ).

    In the 2nd division , a maximum of 24 teams play for promotion to the ÖFB Women's Bundesliga. In the 2016/17 season, a total of 19 teams played for promotion to the ÖFB Women's Bundesliga, seven second teams from clubs were not eligible for promotion.

    The general mode stipulates that each team competed against each other in the respective league. The champions of the two leagues played in a relegation for promotion to the ÖFB Women's Bundesliga. The bottom of the table in each league was relegated.

    2nd division middle / west

    As part of the competition, which is carried out in championship mode, each team played three times against each participating opposing team (a first half with a second half, followed by a first half). The right to the home results from the draw.

    Season course

    The FFC Vorderland won the 2nd division Middle / West and is entitled to play the relegation for the ÖFB Women's Bundesliga for the 2017/18 season.

    The 2nd team of SKN St. Pölten Women won the 2nd division middle / west. Since second teams were not eligible for promotion to the ÖFB Women's Bundesliga, the runner-up, ASK Erlaa, plays relegation to the ÖFB Women's Bundesliga for the 2017/18 season.

    2LOS1SV Neulengbach dissolved the second women's team for financial reasons. Therefore, the FC Südburgenland did not descend.
