The Union Kleinmünchen Linz is a women's soccer club from the Kleinmünchen district of the Upper Austrian capital Linz in Austria and wears the club colors red and white .

history

Founding history

The club was founded in 1980 with players from eight Upper Austrian clubs and immediately entered the top women's division in Austria. The first game against SV Aspern Herzer was clearly won 4-2 on September 14, 1980, thus laying the foundation for the success of the Linz club. In the meantime, women's football in Austria is inextricably linked with Union Kleinmünchen. Since 1980/81 the Linzers have been playing in the first division for 26 seasons and have won a total of eight championship titles , six cup wins and one Supercup victory . In addition, they were runner-up seven times and only once in the club's history were they not among the top five teams in the final ranking.

Bundesliga

The first few years in the women's Bundesliga had to be paid hardship, but the Upper Austrians were already playing for the championship title in the 1984/85 season. At first it was only enough for third place, but from 1987 to 1989 the runner-up title was brought to Linz three times in a row. In the 1990s, the club became the flagship of Austrian women's football. With the exception of the 1994/95 and 1996/97 seasons, where 2nd place was achieved behind the USC Landhaus Wien , the Linz women won all championship titles in the women's Bundesliga in that decade. These eight championship titles initially made Union Kleinmünchen Linz the second most successful club in the all-time ranking of Austrian women's football champions. In recent years, the team has changed generations due to many departures and was unable to continue the previous performance. The players set a good sign for a successful future with the surprising second place in the 2004/05 season. In 2008, however, relegation from the top division had to be accepted. Two years later, however, the Linz women made it up again.

Cup and Supercup

Union Kleinmünchen has reached the finals in the ÖFB Cup nine times and has won the final six times. The Upper Austrians celebrated their highest final success in 1999 with a 6-0 win against USC Landhaus Wien. The biggest defeat in the cup final, however, was also against USC Landhaus in 2001 with 1:10. The Linz women immediately returned the favor in the first ever Supercup game in 2001 and were successful against USC Landhaus 1-0.

Well-known players

Union Kleinmünchen produced numerous well-known players, including many national players. Special mention should be made of Gertrud Stallinger , who was called up 56 times for the national team and also holds the goal record in the A team with 30 goals. As a player, she was active for many years for Kleinmünchen and for four years for the women's team at FC Bayern Munich . The club's first female national team player, Rosa Wimmer, was the winner of the election for football player of the year 1985. Also worth mentioning are the frequent national team players Iris Seibezeder and Maria Kastner. The latter was named soccer player of the year in 1986.

Junior team

In 1987 Union Kleinmünchen founded a 1b team for the young players that was used in the Upper Austrian regional league. As early as 1991, the youngsters won the national championship title. In 1992 the success could be repeated, the Linz women had to wait until 1997 until the third title, but the title could then be won four times in a row until 2000. In 2001 the young players got into the 2nd division middle and finished fourth. In the same year, the Linz women surprisingly celebrated the Upper Austrian Cup victory. In 2002 the 1b team reached sixth place in the 2nd middle division. Due to some departures, the club decided to rebuild the team and voluntarily relegated from the second level. In 2003 the 1b team became indoor champions and sensationally reached the cup semifinals. In addition, the young players were superior champions of the 1st women's class and were promoted back to the 2nd division middle. In 2003 the team finished sixth and in 2004/05 fourth in the 2nd division middle.
