Peter Pokorny

Peter Pokorny (born July 25, 1940 in Graz ) is a former Austrian tennis player and Davis Cup player. He is also one of the world's best senior tennis players.

Career

Pokorny began playing tennis at the age of 6, won numerous Styrian and Austrian youth championship titles, including the Graz-based player in the finals of the Styrian U18 championships as a 14-year-old and became individual Austrian champions in 1965, 1966 and 1968. In 1963 he made his Davis Cup debut against Israel (5-0) and remained an integral part of the Austrian team until 1973. At the side of Hans Kary , the then overpowering English were defeated 3-2 in Edinburgh in 1970 and in the traditional neighborhood duel against Germany in May 1971, the ÖTV selection in one of the most exciting Austrian Daviscup encounters of all time was defeated. Pokorny celebrated his greatest individual successes by winning the German indoor championships in Bremen (1973) and reaching the finals in Lyon (two of the largest indoor tournaments in Europe at the time). In Grand Slam tournaments , Pokorny seldom went as desired, despite numerous participations (including 9 × Wimbledon ), a mixed 1/4 final with Pachta in Wimbledon was the highlight. In 1981 and 1982 Pokorny was the captain of the ÖTV Davis team.

Pokorny has been playing on the Veterans Tour of the ITF ( International Tennis Federation ) since 1986 and is well on the way to becoming one of the most successful senior players of all time. Numerous world and European championship titles as well as countless national team and individual titles make Pokorny the best Austrian tennis senior in history. Since 2007 he has been the bearer of the sports symbol of the city of Graz.

Personal

Peter Pokorny lives in Graz , is married and has two grown sons. He has been running tennis centers in his hometown for over 30 years. In addition to his daily tennis training (2-3 hours), Pokorny is a passionate golfer (handicap. 6).
