Robert Žulj (born February 5, 1992 in Wels ) is an Austrian - Croatian soccer player . He can be used as an attacking midfielder or in attack and is under contract in Germany with VfL Bochum . In addition, he was active for several junior national teams of the ÖFB .

His brother Peter, who is around a year younger , has been active at RSC Anderlecht since 2019 .

Career

Start at FC Wels

Žulj, who has Austrian and Croatian citizenship, began his active career in 1999 in his Upper Austrian hometown of Wels with the local FC Wels . There he was trained as a striker from the start and, like his younger brother, acted in a very dangerous manner early on in his football career. In the 2004/05 season he scored 15 goals in two different U-13 teams of FC Wels and was used in a similar number of games. In the following season, in which he was already used in the U-15 team, his scoring risk decreased significantly compared to the previous year. In a similar number of league games completed, he scored only four goals in two different U-15 teams of the club and was therefore unable to continue the successes of the previous year.

After the harmlessness in front of the opposing goal in the 2005/06 season, the 2006/07 season did not have the desired turnaround for the young Žulj, who from then on was used more often in more defensive positions. Over the entire season, the offensive player had only three league goals, all of which he scored in the U-15 youth league. In the championship of 2007/08 he remained without a goal, but this should change in the following season: In the 2008/09 season Žulj came back to his old offensive strength and advanced to a goalgetter in the U-17 youth league. There were also a total of four goals in the two U-18 teams of FC Wels. Over the course of the season he came in all of his league appearances on a number of 25 goals scored.

This run continued in the 2009/10 season in the U-19 youth league, in which he quickly became one of the most dangerous goal players, which should also be rewarded at the end of the season. In 22 completed championship games it brought Žulj on 16 goals, which brought him the top scorer's crown in 2009/10. Furthermore, he was also used in a U-18 team of FC Wels during this season and was successful there with one goal in a single game in the O.ÖF Junior League U18 .

Change to Ried and professional debut

With the top scorer in the U-19 youth league in his pocket, the cooperation player from the Linz Football Academy , FAL for short , and FC Wels was accepted by the Upper Austrian club SV Ried . There he was supposed to gain experience in the club's second team playing in the fourth-class regional league of Upper Austria and, over time, to recommend himself to the professional team playing in the Austrian Bundesliga at the time . His competitive debut, which was also his debut in a men's team, gave Žulj on August 14, 2010 in the first round match of the ÖFB Cup 2010/11 , a 3-0 defeat against Bundesliga club FK Austria Wien , when he was used from the start and was substituted in the 85th minute of the game.

He made his league debut on August 21, 2010 in a 2-1 away defeat against SV Grieskirchen . In the game Žulj was used from the start, played for the full duration of the match and scored in the 57th minute the goal for the 1-0 lead of his team. After that, however, the striker was only used sporadically, albeit for the full duration of the game.

After he has just completed three league games in men's football at that time, Žulj was used for the first time in a competitive game of the professional team of SV Ried. This happened on September 17, 2010 in the course of the second round of the ÖFB Cup 2010/11, when he came on the lawn in the 64th minute of the game for Iván Carril Regueiro in a 4-0 win over FC Waidhofen / Ybbs . A little more than two weeks later, the then 18-year-old made his Bundesliga debut on October 3, 2010. He was substituted on for the Spaniard Nacho in the 1: 0 home defeat against FC Red Bull Salzburg in the 81st minute of the game when Red Bull Salzburg was 1: 0 . Just a few minutes later, Anel Hadžić provided the assist for his equalizer in the 85th minute of the game. At the end of the 2010/11 season he won the Austrian Cup with SV Ried. On the 2nd matchday of the 2011/12 season he scored his first Bundesliga goal in the away game against SV Mattersburg .

FC Red Bull Salzburg

During the winter break of the 2013/14 season, Žulj signed a contract with FC Red Bull Salzburg that was valid until June 30, 2016 . In the Bundesliga as in the Europa League, he played several appearances as a center forward for Salzburg due to the principle of rotation.

SpVgg Greuther Fürth

For the 2014/15 season, Žulj moved to the 2nd Bundesliga for SpVgg Greuther Fürth . He signed a three-year contract. On August 11, 2014, after being substituted on, he scored his first goal for SpVgg in a 5-1 win against 1. FC Nürnberg .

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and loan to Berlin

For the 2017/18 season , Žulj moved to Bundesliga club TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on a free transfer , with whom he signed a three-year contract. Since he was still out with a pubic bone inflammation at the beginning of the season , he only made his Bundesliga debut on February 3, 2018 (21st matchday) in a 1-1 draw against Hertha BSC for TSG Hoffenheim, when he was in the 70th minute of the game came on for Ádám Szalai .

In August 2018 it was awarded to the second division club 1. FC Union Berlin for the following season . The midfielder played 29 second division games for Union, scoring four goals, and was promoted to the Bundesliga with the Berliners after winning a relegation against VfB Stuttgart . After the loan ended, he returned to TSG for the 2019/20 season , but only played once in the Regionalliga Südwest in the first half of the season .

Change to Bochum

The Austrian then moved to the second division VfL Bochum during the following winter break , with whom he received a contract that ran until June 2023.

The time in the junior national teams

Robert Žulj made his debut in the jersey of the Austrian U19 national team against Russia on August 11, 2010

Žulj gained his first experience in an Austrian youth national team in 2009 in the U18 national team . After being appointed to the squad for the first time by Hermann Stadler at the end of April 2009 , but not being used, he made his debut in the red, white and red team suit on September 16, 2009. In the 1: 2 away defeat against his peers from Switzerland , the young striker was used in the 78th minute of play for Daniel Offenbacher . After another brief outing against the U-18 national team from Bulgaria , the then 18-year-old made his first and, up to the end, only appearance for the U18 in a 3-1 win over his old age colleagues from the Czech Republic on March 24, 2010. National team for the full playing time. Immediately after another half of the game in the 3-0 win over Estonia , Žulj scored his first goal for Austria on May 19, 2010 in his last appearance for Austria's U18s, a 3-1 win over their colleagues from Hungary .

The Croatian offensive player received his first call -up to Austria's U19 squad in early August 2010 for a friendly international match against Russia's U19 national team . In the same game Žulj made his debut in the dress of the U19 national team when he played the entire second half of the game in the 1-1 draw against the Russians. He also took part with the team in qualifying for the 2011 European Championship in Romania and, as a result, played two international matches. Among other things, he scored two goals on October 10, 2010 in a 4-0 win over the U19 national team in San Marinos , where he was also one of the most conspicuous players on the pitch.

On May 15, 2014 Žulj was called up for the first time in the A-squad of the Austrian national team.
