Christian Esteban Gamboa Luna (born October 24, 1989 in Liberia ) is a Costa Rican soccer player . He can be used defensively both in defense and in midfield and is under contract in Germany with VfL Bochum . In addition, Gamboa is a Costa Rican international.

Career

Gamboa moved to Europe in 2010 and signed a contract in Norway with Fredrikstad FK . He made his debut for Fredrikstad in the Adeccoligaen , the second division in Norway. In the 3-2 defeat against Strømmen IF , he played over 90 minutes, scored a goal and prepared a goal. After a year he moved to Denmark for FC Copenhagen . He was under contract in Copenhagen from 2011 to 2013. He was only used in cup games and won the cup in 2012. After a loan to Rosenborg Trondheim from August to December 2012 , he returned in January 2013. In the summer of 2013 he was signed by Trondheim. In August 2014 he moved to the English Premier League at West Bromwich Albion .

In August 2016, Gamboa moved to Scotland to join Celtic Glasgow . He signed a three-year contract with Celtic and was after Moussa Dembélé , Kolo Touré , Scott Sinclair and Dorus de Vries the fifth signing of coach Brendan Rodgers . The first Costa Rican in the club's history made his debut for Celtic in September 2016 on matchday 1 of the group stage of the 2016/17 Champions League season against FC Barcelona . The game at Camp Nou in Barcelona was lost 7-0 and was the biggest defeat in the European Cup by Celtic to date. In the following years he was mostly only a substitute player in the Scots' squad. Mikael Lustig was the main player on the right-back position at this time , while Nir Bitton and Scott Brown were seeded in the defensive midfield . In total, he completed 25 competitive games for the Bhoys in three seasons, 20 of them in the league. With the club he won the triple of championship, cup and league cup three times in a row . However, he was not actively on the pitch in any of the six final wins.

Before the 5th matchday of the 2019/20 season , the German second division VfL Bochum signed the defensive player. He became the first Costa Rican in the club and was given a contract that ran until June 2021.

National team

With the Costa Rican U20 he took part in the 2009 World Cup in Egypt . Here the team reached the game for third place, which was lost to Hungary on penalties. He made his debut for the senior national team on January 26, 2010 in a 3-2 defeat against Argentina . At the 2011 Central American Football Championship, he was second with Costa Rica after losing to Honduras in the final . Gamboa was part of the Costa Rican squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil . Gamboa played for Costa Rica up to the quarter-finals, in which they were eliminated on penalties against the Netherlands , every game. In 2018 he also took part in the World Cup with Costa Rica . He played all three preliminary round matches, but then retired with Costa Rica as the last in Group E.
