Bernd Hirschbichler (born May 5, 1984 in Zell am See ) is an Austrian football referee and educator .

He is a member of the Salzburg Football Association and is a member of the Pinzgau referee panel, where he is also the deputy group spokesman and webmaster of the homepage.

Career as a soccer player

Bernd Hirschbichler has been influenced by football since childhood. Erich Hirschbichler's son grew up on the sports field in his home town of Leogang . Even then he was always more interested in refereeing than in the tactical instructions of a coach, but was active in youth football as a goalkeeper at SC Leogang until he was 13. After a serious back injury, Hirschbichler had to end his active career as a football player and on August 8, 1997 attended the beginners' course for referees at the Salzburg Football Association. On September 1, 1997, Hirschbichler successfully passed the soccer referee examination.

Career as a football referee

At the age of 22, Hirschbichler was allowed to lead his first game in the third highest performance level, the regional league , on May 20, 2006 with the encounter between Reichenau and Hohenems . With this game he was able to qualify for the referee squad of the Regionalliga West from the 2007/08 season.

This was the next step in his career, because on July 31, 2007 he made his debut as assistant referee in the first division in the game Kapfenberger SV against FC Lustenau (2: 1) at the side of referee Rudolf Gruber . After seven appearances in the second-highest division, Hirschbichler came on February 26, 2008 in the game SK Austria Kärnten against SK Sturm Graz (0: 2) at the side of referee Bernhard Brugger for the first time as assistant referee in the Bundesliga .

Due to his good assessments as a referee in the Regionalliga West and as an assistant referee in the Bundesliga, Hirschbichler was accepted into the Bundesliga talent squad. In the 2008/09 season he was initially entrusted with a competition management in each of the regional leagues center and east. After two more appearances in the regional leagues center and east in autumn 2009, Hirschbichler was nominated for two qualifying games in the first division in spring 2010 . He was allowed to make his debut in Austria's second-highest division on March 23, 2010 in the game between FC Gratkorn and FC Dornbirn (1: 2). After successfully completing the second qualifying game on May 7, 2010 between FK Austria Wien II and SKN St. Pölten (1: 3), Hirschbichler was definitely included in the Bundesliga referee squad on July 1, 2010 and is thus allowed to play in the first Lead the league.

Internationally, Hirschbichler was allowed to make his debut as a referee on August 26, 2010 at the friendly international match of the U-17 teams between Austria and Croatia (3: 1) in Vöcklabruck . Hirschbichler had already made international appearances as an assistant referee. On August 20, 2008, he assisted Bernhard Brugger in the friendly international match between Luxembourg and Macedonia (1: 4). On July 23, 2009, Hirschbichler was again used in an international game as Bernhard Brugger's assistant. This time it was an official match with Olimpi Rustawi qualifying for the UEFA Europa League against Legia Warsaw (0-1).

Hirschbichler learned on October 1, 2010 that refereeing can also be dangerous. In the championship game of First Vienna FC 1894 against the syndicate Wolfsberger AC / St. Andrä (1-0) he was downright knocked out by Mathias Berchtold , but was able to lead the game to the end after a longer treatment break. Hirschbichler also had to get to know the downside of a referee. "If someone insults you deeply while walking with your girlfriend in the pedestrian zone, you're wondering where all this can lead," Hirschbichler told Salzburg24.at . However, when he was threatened via Facebook and SMS , he turned the police on.

Despite good observation reports, Hirschbichler was denied promotion to the Austrian Bundesliga . The main reason was that his body kept causing problems. In the summer and autumn of 2012 he was out for several months due to a serious injury and had to accept a longer injury break in the autumn of 2014. This was also the reason why Hirschbichler had to quit his professional career at the end of 2014. In the amateur area - regional league and below - he continues his work as a football referee.

In addition to his work as a referee, Hirschbichler has been a regular referee in the Salzburg referees committee since 2013. In addition, in 2016 he was elected deputy chairman of the Salzburg arbitration board. On November 15, 2019, Hirschbichler was elected chairman of the Salzburg referees to succeed Norbert Schwab , who resigned from his position after eight years.
