history

The city was founded in 1912 by Carlos Fernández . Until then, only the coastal strip of the Río Paraná and Río Paraguay rivers in the Chaco province was inhabited, but an upswing in the region made it necessary to develop areas further west. Thus a railway line was built from Resistencia to Salta , on which Presidencia Roque Sáenz Peña developed. The name reminds of Roque Sáenz Peña (1910–1914), who was in office at the time the city was founded . In the 1920s and 1930s, the city experienced rapid population growth, with Central Europeans in particular settling here to grow cotton .
