Nestor Giovannini (* 7. February 1961 in Rafaela as Nestor Hipolito Giovannini ) is a former boxer in the cruiserweight division . He was from June 26, 1993 to December 17, 1994 WBO world champion in this weight class, until he was dethroned by the originally from the light heavyweight Poland Dariusz Michalczewski .

Career

Not much is known about Giovannini's amateur career. He played his first professional fight against Mario Oskar Melo in Morteros, Argentina . He lost by split decision after six rounds. After two more development fights, he fought a second time against Melo, against whom he won by split decision. Giovannini lost the third fight by unanimous decision on points. Most of Giovannini's opponents were nameless and mostly lost unanimously or by knockout against Giovannini. The next big fight he denied against Jorge Juan Salgado for the Argentine championship in cruiserweight. He won the fight through TKO in round eleventh. Only a little later he fought against Salgado a second time. This time for the South American championship title. It ended in a draw. He was also able to win the Argentine championship against Eduardo Domingo Contreras. In the third fight against Jorge Juan Salgado, he suffered a defeat.

His first fight against a well-known opponent was against Jeff Harding . Harding went into the ring as the clear favorite. Giovannini was able to convince, but lost due to an eye injury by TKO in the eleventh round. The first time for a world association fought Giovannini on May 18, 1990, again against Jeff Harding. Harding defended the WBC in this fight . Giovannini was able to cause Harding several difficulties, but was very dazed after a head hit in Harding's favor and therefore lost unanimously on points.

Only a little later he lost in the fourth and final fight against Jorge Juan Salgado unanimously on points. After he brought Andreas Anselmi to the ground three times in the first round, he was selected as a mandatory challenger to WBO world champion Markus Bott despite his many defeats . Bott was the clear favorite in the ring and surprisingly lost to Giovannini, who was one year older. The result was inconsistent but undisputed and Giovannini was the reigning world champion of the WBO association (However, the WBO was not yet one of the major associations at that time). He defended the title five times, including Bott by unanimous decision on points.

Therefore he became the compulsory world champion of the undefeated Poland Dariusz Michalczewski , who owned three of the four world associations with the WBO , WBA and IBF , albeit in the light heavyweight division . Like most of Michalczewski's opponents, he had no chance. He was brought down three times and lost by knockout in the tenth round.

After this defeat he played five more fights, of which he lost two, won two and left one a draw. The last fight of his career he played on January 29, 2000 against Ezra Sellers. He lost this to TKO in the first round, which is why he declared his career over.
