Wilhelm Lehmann (later also Guillermo Lehmann , born August 20, 1840 in Sigmaringendorf , † October 10, 1886 in Buenos Aires ) was a German emigrant, colonist and city founder in Argentina .

Life

Lehmann's birthplace in Sigmaringendorf

Lehmann grew up as the son of a Webmeisters on the former spinning Stölker in Sigmaringendorf. The Lehmann family moved to Switzerland a few years after his birth, and his son Wilhelm finally emigrated to Argentina in 1862 and initially settled there in the town of Hope. There Lehmann built the Empresa Colonizadora Guillermo Lehmann , a colonial society through which he founded a total of 18 cities, mainly in the department of Castellanos , in the west of the province of Santa Fe . The best known and largest of these communities is the city of Rafaela , which was founded in 1881 and is the capital of the department of Castellanos, with more than 90,000 inhabitants today. The city got its name from the wife of Wilhelm Lehmann. One of the other cities founded by Lehmann also bears his name: The city of Lehmann ( 31 ° 13 ′  S , 61 ° 46 ′  W ) , which was also founded in 1881. Other cities founded by Lehmann include Aurelia, Egusquiza, Humberto 1, President Roca, Susana and Virginia, Felicia and Villa Trinidad.

Little is known about Lehmann's life, only that he died under tragic circumstances at the age of 46.

Honors

The city of Rafaela had a larger than life statue of its founder erected in the city center before 1970, and a technical school, the Escuela de Educación Técnica N ° 460 "Guillermo Lehmann", is named after him. In 1981 the mayors of Lehmann and Sigmaringendorf unveiled a Wilhelm Lehmann memorial in the city of Lehmann on the occasion of its centenary. At the end of January 1981, the Sigmaringendorf community honored its most famous son by renaming the town center from Rathausplatz to Wilhelm-Lehmann-Platz . The house where Wilhelm Lehmann was born ( 48 ° 3 ′ 58.33 ″  N , 9 ° 15 ′ 46.79 ″  E ) is located on Wilhelm-Lehmann-Platz in the immediate vicinity of the town hall .

Town twinning

Lehmann was forgotten for a long time in Sigmaringendorf; he is not mentioned in the chronicle of the community before 1970. Then, however, while searching for information about the city founder Rafaelas, Argentinian researchers discovered his hometown and contacts between the cities of Rafaela, Lehmann and the municipality of Sigmaringendorf emerged, from which in 1979 a city partnership between Rafaela and Sigmaringendorf emerged. In the relevant document of the community Sigmaringendorf it says:

“Inspired by the desire to make the friendly ties between the city of Rafaela and the community of Sigmaringendorf even closer and more cordial, in the hope of honoring the merits of the founder of the city of Rafaela, Mr. Wilhelm Lehmann, and in the expectation of doing our part for international understanding to contribute, the community of Sigmaringendorf takes over the sponsorship for the city of Rafaela (Argentina) "
