24 teams took part in the EuroLeague. Of these, 22 teams qualified directly for the group stage. One of them was the winner of the 2008/09 Eurocup , the Lithuanian team BC Lietuvos Rytas . The remaining 21 places were determined by A and B licenses. A-licenses are the right to play in the EuroLeague for several years to eight specific clubs, which are valid until the 2011/2012 season. In addition, 14 B licenses were issued that were valid for this season. The remaining two places were played out through a qualification among eight teams. The decision as to which teams get a B license and which have to qualify is made by the ULEB, taking into account the placement and league strength of the domestic leagues as well as the audience rating of the teams. In addition, three wildcards were also awarded under these criteria .
The 24 teams were divided into four groups of six teams each, with each team playing one home and one away game against every other team. The first four teams in each group came into the second group phase with four groups of four teams, in which each team also played a home and away game against every other team. The second group stage was drawn on January 18, 2010 in Barcelona . The best two teams in the second group phase qualified for the knockout system, which was played in the best-of-five mode. The teams that prevailed qualified for the Final Four tournament at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy in Paris, where the semi-finals and finals and the game for third place were played. These games were simple knockout games.
The group phase and the qualifying matches were drawn on July 8, 2009 in Barcelona, with the participants in the final four tournament of the previous season being set as group heads.
