The Kaunas sports hall from the outside

The Kaunas Sports Hall ( Lithuanian Kauno sporto hale , KSH ) is a basketball - sports hall in the Lithuanian city of Kaunas . It was the first of its kind in Europe and offers up to 11,000 seats with 3,500 seats. The construction costs were 400,000 LTL (220,000 Litas were covered by bonds ). The sports hall is 62.8 meters long, 61 meters wide and 15.2 meters (in the middle of the hall) high.

history

Construction of the Kaunas sports hall began on December 5, 1938 and lasted until May 10, 1939. The basketball hall was opened with the European Basketball Championship in 1939 on May 21 of that year. The hall was built after the Lithuanian national basketball team won their first European Championship title at the 1937 European Championship in Riga, Latvia . At the EM in 1939, the Lithuanians were able to defend the title in front of their own audience.

Since 1983, the Kaunas Sports Hall has been part of a sports complex with the S.Dariaus and S.Girėno Stadium ( S. Dariaus ir S. Girėno stadionas in Lithuanian ). This complex was renamed the Darius and Girėnas Sports Center ( Lithuanian S. Dariaus ir S. Girėno sporto centras ) in 1993 .

Since May 24, 2007 it has been part of the Lithuanian Cultural Heritage .

She was until moving in 2011 to the multi-purpose hall Žalgirio Arena , with up to 15,000 seats, the venue for the basketball team Zalgiris Kaunas ..
