Joshua Malik Childress (born June 20, 1983 in Harbor City , California , United States ) is an American professional basketball player who was most recently under contract with the Brooklyn Nets .

Career

Childress, who was not only basketball but also an avid volleyball player in his youth, began his basketball career at Mayfar High School in Lakewood , California, where he was invited to the McDonald's All-American Game , among other things . After high school he moved to the renowned Stanford University , where he was active until 2004 and then signed up for the NBA Draft . There he was selected in sixth place by the Atlanta Hawks , which also meant the highest ranking of a Stanford University player at all. Along with Josh Smith , with whom he played with the Atlanta Hawks, Childress was considered one of the most promising talents of the 2004 NBA draft . In the course of the first professional season he advanced to a leading player in the team and was able to achieve an average of 10.1 points. He also received an appointment to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team . Childress was able to improve steadily over the next few years and was still an integral part of the Hawks. All the more surprising was the news on July 23, 2008, according to which Childress had signed an unprecedented 3-year contract with the highly ambitious Greek first division club Olympiacos Piraeus. This contract was endowed with a net income of 20 million US dollars over the contract period of 3 years and also promised Childress a house, a car and the costs for his agent, all of which was paid by Olympiakos. He also received an advertising contract with the well-known sporting goods manufacturer Nike . For this contract offer, Childress even turned down an offer from his old employer, the Atlanta Hawks, which would have brought him 33 million US dollars within five years, less than at Olympiakos.

Childress also joined his new team and led the team into the final of the ULEB Euroleague in the second year , which was clearly lost against FC Barcelona with 86:68 .

After two years in Europe, Childress returned to the NBA, where he received a contract with the Phoenix Suns and should replace Amar'e Stoudemire, who had migrated to New York . However, he could not convince and was finally released under an amnesty clause.

After a long wait, he finally received an offer from the Brooklyn Nets for the 2012/2013 season and signed a contract with the Nets in September 2012. With the Nets, however, Childress could not become a permanent part of the rotation as hoped and in December 2012 his contract was terminated by the Nets.

In his youth Childress made the leap into the junior national team of the USA, with which he took part in the Pan American Games in 2003, among others.

In 2004, Childress was the cover star of the basketball simulation ESPN NBA2K5 , which was published for the Playstation 2 by the game manufacturer Sega .

Private

Josh Childress was born in Harbor City to Dave and Terri Childress and has three brothers. He has been married to volleyball player Alisha Glass since 2017 .
