The Astroballe , or L'Astroballe , is a multi-purpose hall in the district of Cusset French community Villeurbanne , Region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . The on Boulevard de Lyon périphérique in Métropole de Lyon Arena lying mainly from the basketball club ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne , through sponsorship agreement LDLC ASVEL from the LNB Pro A used. Opened in 1995, the hall borders directly to the north on the Stade Georges-Lyvet , where the club's rugby union team , ASVEL Rugby, plays its home games. In addition to basketball, u. a. handball games also take place in the Astroballe. A few days before the 2010 European women's handball championship in Norway and Denmark , the preparatory international match between France and Russia was played in Villeurbanne on December 2nd . It was a new edition of the final of the handball world championship 2009 that the Russians won with 22:25.

The hall is too small for the requirements of the basketball EuroLeague . In July 2016, plans were presented for a new hall called the ASVEL Arena with 10,500 seats and costs of 45 to 55 million euros , which should be completed on the site of the Stade Georges-Lyvet 2020. In June 2019, the two presidents Tony Parker (ASVEL) and Jean-Michel Aulas ( Olympique Lyon ) signed a partnership agreement with OL holding a 25 percent minority stake in LDLC ASVEL and Lyon ASVEL Féminin. Aulas has been planning to build a multi-purpose hall on the site around the Groupama Stadium for a long time . The event arena in Décines-Charpieu (Métropole de Lyon) should offer a maximum of 15,000 to 16,000 seats for concerts. There should be space for 12,000 spectators for basketball games. There is also a large seminar room with 3000 seats. It should be ready in 2023 or 2024. Until then, ASVEL will remain in the Astroballe. After the partnership became known, Jean-Paul Bret, the mayor of Villeurbanne, announced the abandonment of the plans for a new hall.
