Evangelos "Vangelis" Mantzaris ( Greek Ευάγγελος "Βαγγέλης" Μάντζαρης , born April 16, 1990 in Peristeri ) is a Greek basketball player who is 1.95 m tall and can be used in the positions of point guard or shooting guard .

Career

At club level

Mantzaris specified his basketball game in the youth departments of the GS Peristeri and was appointed to their professional team for the 2007/08 season after the team had been promoted to the A2 Ethniki , the second Greek basketball league. As early as the following season 2008/09, the GS Peristeri secured promotion to the upper house and returned to the A1 Ethniki after four years of abstinence . The then 19-year-old Mantzaris was used in his first year in the top division of Greece in 22 of a possible 26 games, but initially only got a little playing time. The following season 2010/11 was more successful for him. Mantzaris, who had meanwhile developed his game further, was used in all league games and got a lot more time per game from his coach. With seventh place in the main round, the GS Peristeri also made it into the playoffs . The team was defeated in the first round by the eventual champions Panathinaikos Athens with 2-0 games. Thus Mantzaris came in 28 games, with 88 of 210 converted point throws, to a total of 240 points.

The skills of the guard had not escaped the talent scouts, who had him on their lists since his successful appearances in various junior national teams. On September 6, 2011 Olympiacos announced that they had signed the young talent. There Mantzaris met his national team colleagues Kostas Sloukas and Kostas Papanikolaou, among others . Mantzaris played his first league game in the dress of the "red and white" on October 24, 2011 against PAOK Saloniki , which the team from Piraeus won with 65:52 points. In the 2011/12 season Mantzaris was used in 29 games and earned 119 points. That season was a very successful one for Olympiakos. The team, around the young talents, not only succeeded in providing the Greek champions, but also made it to the Final Four of the Euroleague , the most highly endowed competition for club teams in European basketball. Acted as an outsider, they faced two-time Euroleague winners FC Barcelona in the second semifinals , who were beaten with 68:64 points. A purely Greek final was prevented by CSKA Moscow in advance. The Russian club defeated the reigning title holder Panathinaikos in the first semifinals with 66:64 points. In the final in front of 15,500 spectators, Olympiakos was 14 points behind (20:34) at halftime. With a courageous race to catch up in the second half of the game, the Greeks turned the result and defeated the Russian champions with 63:62 points.

In 2012/13 Olympiacos dominated both the Greek basketball league and the Euroleague. Olympiakos suffered their first and only defeat in the main round of the Basket League on January 27, 2013. In the away game against PAOK Saloniki, the team from Piraeus lost 71:76 points. In this game Mantzaris seriously injured his right knee and was out of all competitions for the entire season. So he celebrated the runner-up and the defense of the Euro League trophy only as a spectator. For the 2013/14 season, the Guard returned to the floor and completed 35 of a possible 36 league games. As in the previous year, Olympiakos lost 2: 3 games to their arch-rival Panathinaikos in the final of the playoffs for the Greek championship. In the Euroleague, the club failed in the quarter-finals to Real Madrid .

Real Madrid should also be the club that prevented the double for Mantzaris for the 2014/15 season . Olympiakos secured the Greek championship, but was defeated in the final of the Euroleague by the Spanish hosts and hosts, in the new edition of the final of 2012/13, with 59:78 points. Mantzaris experienced another personal moment against Real Madrid in the 2015/16 season when he celebrated his personal best in the Euroleague with 19 points in the EuroLeague intermediate round match in the 99:84 points victory of Olympiakos over Madrid with 19 points. In the same season he won his third national championship with Olympiakos.

On October 8, 2016, the first matchday of the 2016/17 season , Mantzaris completed his 197th game in the Basket League, converting his 200th three point throw. He broke the mark of 500 given assists on January 22nd, 2017 in the game against Koroivos Amaliadas when he came up with four assists to a total of 501. In the EuroLeague , on November 11, 2016, he once again achieved 19 points in the group game against Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul .

National team

Mantzaris went through all of Greece's youth national teams. Among other things, he won the gold medal with the Greek U-18 team at the European Championships in 2008. In the final, the Greek team met the Lithuanian selection, which it defeated with 57:50 points.

At the U-19 World Basketball Championship in New Zealand in 2009 , the Greek selection around Mantzaris also reached the final. But she lost to the Americans in Auckland with 88:80 points.

The Greek also took part in the U-20 European Championship in 2009. In the final, the Greeks defeated the French selection with 90:85 points.

The same finals were held again at the 2010 European Championships. The U-20 selections of Greece and France met again. This time the French prevailed with 73:62 points.

For the A squad , he took part in the 2014 World Cup and the 2015 European Championship .
