UNICS Kazan is a professional basketball club from Russia . The association is based in the city of Kazan in the Republic of Tatarstan in the Volga Federal District . UNICS - is on the transcription UNI versität- C ulture- S port.

history

The history of the predecessor club of UNICS begins in 1957 at the University of Kazan. The team achieved some success in student basketball and in 1965 and 1970 it became the best university team in the Soviet Union.

The re-establishment took place in 1991. The first few years they played lower class up to promotion to the Russian super league in the 1996/97 season. After two very successful years, each with a fifth place in the regular championship, UNICS established itself as one of the strongest Russian teams in the new millennium. The first national title was won in 2003 with the Russian Cup, when they beat CSKA 82:81 in overtime. The first European title followed in 2004 when they won the Final Four in the FIBA EuroCup against Maroussi with 87:63. In the following years they were consistently among the top four teams in the Russian championship, but the next success was a long time coming until 2009, when they won the Russian Cup again. The most successful year in the history of UNICS so far was the year 2011 when they finished third in the Russian championship after winning the regular season and then won the ULEB Eurocup . The following year they started in the ULEB Euroleague for the first time and reached the quarter-finals. The next title win came in 2014 with victory in the national cup. In the same year UNICS reached the final of the Eurocup, but lost to Valencia in two games.
